Maui Sails 2012
For this season, Maui Sails have tweaked their whole range of wave and freestyle sails. They have expanded the wind ranges of their sails by creating softer, more responsive foils across the board whilst still maintaining decent speed and pointing ability.
The Legend is Maui Sails’ pure down-the-line wave-sail. It has been evolved for 2012 partly by technical knowledge gained from race sail development.
This year, the sail has received a shorter luff which actually reduces the tension in the foil (by about 10Kg). This gives a more pump-able, easy to get going sail, still with plenty of upwind ability. The foot of the sail has also been cut slightly higher to help with more radical turns.
Being a full XPly™ wave sail, it can take a real battering. This year, a special small yarn / light film laminate has been used in the top of the sail to give the sail a lighter feel–ideal for throwing it about.
The Legend is available in 2.9, 3.3, 3.5, 3.7, 4.0, 4.2, 4.5, 4.7, 5.0, 5.3, 5.7 and 6.1
The Ghost is now in its third year as Maui Sails’ extremely light wavesail. Originally it was only available in larger sizes, specifically designed for big surf in light wind. The model has now been expanded across smaller sizes as more and more people liked the lightweight feel.
This year the sail has been given a shorter luff and higher foot for the same reason as the Legend. This has given a sail that not only is extremely lightweight but also performs and handles very well.
The sail is made from Technora laminate which has a strength to weight ratio that is three times higher than fibreglass, polyester or nylon. It also has great fatigue resistance which means that it holds up very well to flexing, abrasion and UV.
The Ghost is now available in 4.5, 4.7, 5.0, 5.3, 5.7, 6.1 and 6.7 weighing in at as little as 2.9Kg for the 4.5!
The Global is Maui Sails’ power (onshore) wave sail. It is designed to really excel in difficult onshore conditions whilst still working well in down-the-line perfection.
This year, the foot profile has been slightly straightened, making the sail work better in flat water freestyle conditions.
Like the Legend, the sail has also been given the small yarn / light film laminate treatment to reduce the weight higher up the sail.
The Global is available in 4.0, 4.2, 4.5, 4.7, 5.0, 5.4, 5.8, 6.2 and 6.8
The Loco is Maui Sails’ pure freestyle sail as used by Taty Frans. They have worked hard together to produce a sail that excels in all conditions, reacting smoothly, being firm enough to support all the contorted positions but soft enough to quickly get power and accelerate into manoeuvres.
This year, the top part of the sail has been slightly flattened and the mast bend has been slightly reduced to soften the sail overall while the mid-leech tension has been slightly tightened through changes in the body shaping. This gives a sail that gives plenty of grunt and âpop’ whilst still remaining very precise for the most difficult moves.
The sail has been given an XPly™ window to make it more crash proof and is available in 4.0, 4.4, 4.8, 5.2, 5.8, 6.0 and 6.4
