Starboard AERO 2006: 2 boards

Another completely NEW light wind board from Starboard.
We caught up with Starboard designer, Tiesda You, to try and find out what the AERO was all about!

INTERVIEW WITH TIESDA YOU

Another light wind board from Starboard. Why?

Tiesda: In windsurfing, if it's not 6.5m weather or less, people tend NOT to think about going windsurfing. We want to change this!
We realized that there are a lot of places where the wind is light (less than 12 knots) and very few places where the wind is 6m weather or less every day. In Thailand, where we design the Starboard range, people would be sailing a 9.5m down to a 7.5m on a windy day as that was all the wind they got.
So we figured we had to design a whole generation of boards just for those sail sizes.

So where does the AERO fit in?

Tiesda: Well in terms of light wind boards, we started off with the Go board and then the Formula range and then the big Carves and even the Hypersonic boards where people can do slalom in light winds.
All these people going sailing in lighter winds were free riding, racing or cruising.
Now we wanted a board that could fill the gap: a bump and jump, light wind, medium wave board that you could sail with a 6.5m to 9.5m - the AERO.

How is it different from your Carve range?

Tiesda: It is much more maneuverable that the Carves. See it as a hardcore version of a freeride board with the rail shapes of the Evo and a pretty curved rocker line.

You can do jumps, tricks and surf the waves. It’s just the last segment to the light/medium wind board range.

Who will buy it?

Tiesda: Not many people would think about going out on a 7m and doing tricks and riding the waves. That’s because the equipment to do it on didn’t exist. Now we have this board to fill that gap.
If you're more into straight-line blasting when it's light, then go for a Carve or an S-type. But if you want to do some tricks and ride some waves in light winds, then go for the Aero.
