Q: What do you like about the board?

A: Everything! I like the shape, its weight and the thin responsive tail for turning on waves. It has a good volume distribution and will float you out if the wind is light. Even the graphics are good! It’s good for freestyle because it has softer and tucked rails without making it sticky and it has plenty of pop. I can get sweet backloops even when not so powered up. It’s not the most comfortable for long range blasting, but that is not really what it is designed for. For a board of its style, its upwind ability is good, it gets planing early and you can stay upwind in a wave break. It seems to be very strong, not broken it yet! Also the footstraps are brilliant. They don’t take on water, they don’t collapse and they keep your feet in when you are doing the move!

Q: What are its limitations?

A: It is a full on wavey shape, not a blaster which fits my purpose perfectly. But it is quite smooth over chop. It could maybe do with a slightly more domed deck, but not much.

Q: How does it differ from the board you used last year?

A: Last year I had an F2 style 255, which I really liked as an all round board, fantastic for jumping but limited by its wave riding ability. This Drops board retains the all round quality like the F2 but goes down the line nicer.

Q: What sail sizes can you use with it?

A: They recommend a 4.5 to a 5.7 but I mostly use it with a 5.3 and 5.7.

Q: What fin do you use with it and where do you position it?

A: Standard 23cm wave fin, set in the middle.

Q: Where do you put the mast track for different sail sizes?

A: Half to three quarters forward for a big sail. This enables me to engage more of the rail in light conditions. If I am powered up I put it back a quarter. But if overpowered I put it forward again although at this point I would be changing to a smaller board. Because these boards are a lot shorter the mast track position makes less of a difference.

Q: What about your footstraps?

A:

I have them quite wide apart with the front ones well forward for more manoeuvrability. The back one should be over the fin and probably in the second to rear setting.

Q: What other boards are in your quiver?

A: All Drops, SO Wave 75, Slash 108, Trial 400 freestyle board.

Q: Any other comments?

A: Drops have really good fittings and finish and as they are all shaped by Sean Ordenez a world renowned shaper, and also a windsurfer, at least you know he is out there making sure the designs work. They are also priced competitively. For further information go to www.drops.net. For UK distribution contact drops UK at spot on water on 01425 272509. info@spotonwater.co.uk
