If you want one board to go wave riding
and freestyling, this is it! I have been
amazed how versatile it is. Yes I am lucky
that I have access to the full range of Fanatic
boards, but whilst training in Fuerte for
a week, I used this almost every day in light
wind wave sailing to strong wind freestyle.
It loves driving through chop and is very
manoeuvrable.
Q:
What are its limitations?
A:
I would say when it gets 4.5m and less
and you want to go wave sailing or out in
bump and jump, it will feel too big.
Q:
How
does it differ from last year's model?
A:
Last years Goya 85 was actually 92 litres.
Whereas this year’s Freewave 86 is
86 litres! So this year’s model is
less floaty and with its thin deck, it feels
more “wavey”. Last years model
was more of a freestyle/freeride board. It
also feels faster to me.
Q:
What sail sizes do you use with
it?
A:
In waves and choppy conditions I use between
a 5m and 6m sail. If using it for freestyle,
I use no bigger than a 5.4m sail. In lighter
winds, I change to my Fanatic Skate.
Q:
What fin do you use with it and
where do you position it?
A:
It comes with a 25cm fin but I use a 22cm
wave fin because I tend to use this board
at the high wind end of its capabilities.
When it’s 5m weather and less, you
don’t need a big fin to get you planning
so it just gets in the way of aerial freestyle
or trips you up when wave sailing.
Q:
Where do you put the mast track
for different sail sizes?
A:
Measure 135cm from the back of the board
and mark it on the mast track. That’s
where I have my mast foot which is slightly
forward of the centre.
Q:
What other boards are in your quiver?
A:
A 100 litre freestyle Skate and a new
73 litre Freewave 05.
