Q: What do you like about the sail?

A:

The soft feel and fantastic acceleration, it feels very light in the hands, which makes for easier transitions (when talking about race sails). They almost feel like freeride sails.

Q: What are its limitations?

A: I think 20 knots is about its maximum for me, it’s not fast to sail really overpowered.

Q: What mast do you use with it?

A: I use the recommended mast, the NEILPRYDE X9, that goes for all the sails.

Q: What boards have you used with it?

A: The sonic 100 and the Sonic 110.

Q: How does it differ from last year’s model?

A: The sail is definitely softer and has more top end speed and acceleration, I felt the sail has a better wind range than last years RS3. The NEILPRYDE RS4 is the best race sail I have ever used.

Q: Describe in detail how you set it.

A:

I literally just follow the settings on the sail, they are generally right although I go for a bit less outhaul tension than recommended, my sail is touching the boom on the last quarter of the boom at the clew end. The sails rigging is different from past years. It is rigged as follows: insert mast into luff sleeve, but not in the cams, apply minimal downhaul, attach boom, apply maximum outhaul, pop the cams onto the mast, apply maximum downhaul. I always try to get the pulleys to touch so the foot of the sail is closer to the board when you sheet in (it’s more efficient this way). Use a winch if you can’t pull it right down. Winches are a real back-saver too. The more downhaul you manage, the more twist you have in the sail. This will generate more speed and control, allowing you to have negative outhaul to give you that extra power.

Q: What is the sail like over powered and under powered?

A: I can hold the sail in stronger winds and sail overpowered easier. The sail doesn’t want to dump you in the water straight away if you sheet out so it’s quite forgiving for a race sail. They are very powerful sails so get planing nice and early which is what you’d expect from a full-on sail.

Q: What other sail sizes are in your quiver?

A: I have every size in the NEILPRYDE RS4 Speedseekers. Also every size in the RS4 Formula sails apart from 12.5.

Q: Any other comments?

A: The sails almost feel like freeride sails, but beware of the extra wide luff sleeve which may make waterstarting a bit of a handful.
