The STARBOARD SONIC’s speed is
exceptional, I really like the feel of
the board on the gybe, its what I like
about it the most. The sailor has to commit
to the gybe 100% otherwise it will have
a tendency to throw you off, so as long
as the sailor stays committed to the turn,
the board behaves nicely.
Q:
What are its limitations?
A:
I felt it didn’t like to be sailed
on a tight reach as comfortably as other
slalom boards I know, but then it is designed
for downwind slalom.
Q:
What size sails do you use with
it?
A:
I use the NEILPRYDE RS4 7.8, 7.2, 6.7 and
6.2.
Q:
What fin do you use with it and
where do you position it?
A:
I will use Deboichet’s slalom fins
but haven’t received them yet, I have
complete trust in their Formula fins and
I know they make good slalom fins too. But
while I wait to receive the custom fins I
am using the standard fin that comes with
the board.
Q:
Where do you put the mast track
for different sail sizes?
A:
I alter the position of the mast track
about 3/4 of the way back for my smaller
sizes and nearer the middle for the bigger
sizes. However someone else might feel uncomfortable
with this so just go by feel, if the board
is lifting out of control push the track
forward 1 cm at a time until you get comfortable.
Q:
Where do you put the foot straps
and why?
A:
I have my straps in the forward positions
on the rear straps and rear positions on
the front straps only because I feel more
comfortable this way.
Q:
What other boards are in your quiver?
A:
I have the STARBOARD EVO 80, STARBOARD
sonic 90, the STARBOARD sonic 110, a STARBOARD
carve 145 and two STARBOARD Formula 158’s,
(one for training/number 2 raceboard, and
my number 1 raceboard)
