Adam Sims in Fuerte

Who and what?

I was in Fuerte this summer for six weeks with the UK groms: Alex Mitchell, Oscar Carmichael, Sam Conroy, Charlie Wilson and a guest appearance for a week from Nick Bentley. We also crashed for a week in the Austrians pimped pad when we didn’t have anywhere to stay.

Good conditions?

Epic, truly epic! It was full power almost all the time, so much so that we actually took days off when it was just too windy. We had a couple days off around the PWA event and I had a few more due to injury.

Do tell…

Watch the crash section of the video… I was pretty set on stepping up my level this year so that hopefully next year with the right support I can do enough of the PWA events. This led to a total of about 8-9 days off the water. One was for a suspected broken leg – a crack running down the length of the bone was seen on the x-ray so they sent it to a specialist in Germany who luckily cleared it up as an artefact on the x-ray! The other more serious injury was sending myself into the boom whilst trying a pushy, I’d gone off downwind at a bit at full speed, actually a lot downwind and just didn’t rotate the last bit. It resulted in a triple dose of valium to the bum and a lot of entertainment for everyone looking after me. I have to say thanks to the Austrians; Hanna, Micho and Marco for helping me out those few times and of course the UK guys.

What gear were you sailing mostly?

The all new, super fast, 2012 100l RRD Twintip and 4.2/4.7 RRD Wave Vogues. I found the Vogue had a lot of stability when ducking in the stronger winds. Pretty essential for new skool moves.

What new moves?

A lot of it was about developing my style and consistency on the new skool moves like burners, air funnels and culos but I did learn a few new things – mainly combo moves, like spock kono, spock culo, puneta switch kono as well as getting a sneaky no handed burner!

What are you up to next?

The plan at the moment is to compete in this last UK freestyle event in Poole, it looks to be fully windy so game on. Then I’m sticking around for a couple of months. After that I’m off to Cape Town for 5 weeks or so, training and testing all the latest RRD gear.

Are you going to be UK champ?

Errr hopefully… we shall see, I think the worst possible outcome is I’m joint first with the discard deciding it… there will be a lot of heats this weekend, that’s for sure so things could get confusing!
