Phil's Pozo Chronicles

After a classic PWA Gran Canaria event last season – the emergence of Koster and the latest crop of new kids on the block, doubles galore, killer combos, brand-new moves, trademark hardcore winds and the meatiest Canarian windswell rumbling onto the boulders – the world’s wavesailing talent have been preparing themselves for the start of the 2010 PWA Wave Tour all winter. But things haven’t run smoothly for Pozo 2010. After months of speculation on the future of the Canaries Tour in the face of Spain’s particular woes at the hands of the global economic crisis, a slightly shorter event was only finally confirmed this last couple of weeks. And now that the riders are in situ to train for next week’s comp, the wind is uncharacteristically light. So you can excuse the 2010 run-up being comparatively muted thus far…

But, when did Pozo not deliver some fireworks? OK, the odds are against it but we could see a triple this year, even so-so conditions should be enough to unveil something new, everyone’s been hard in training with all sorts of new fin configurations… So we felt it was time to get some buzz going – and who better to ask for the inside line than port tack specialist Phil Horrocks, who last year blogged on one of the most popular forum threads we’ve ever had.

Question was, what with the money he spent on pasteles and coffee in the internet café last year, would Phil agree to cover this year's event?

Happily, the answer is yes! So in return, the least we could do is show you good people what Phil’s capable of so you can get behind our man on Gran Can. And here’s a gallery of Phil training port tack last winter in South Africa. So dust that vuvuzela off, because you can at least be certain of one thing – there’s still some British talent to support in World Cup competition!!!

Keep up with all the latest pre-event happenings from Phil Horrocks, ask questions and get back into a World Cup mood at http://www.boardseekermag.com/forum/read.php?3,5121 – we’ll have all the action for you as it unfolds direct from Alfie next week.
