UKWA Rhosneigr - Live Update
May 15, 2009 09:48AM
Today is the first day of the second UK wave event of the year (Rhosneigr).

The Pros are scheduled to start today, with amateurs and Slalom fleets starting tomorrow (Saturday).

The forecast is looking awesome for Sat and Sunday, but today has little chance of wind. We will bring you updates as and when they happen! If the forecast delivers, we may even see a proper surf slalom event over the weekend!

This morning, the pro fleet are arriving and getting registered, but we dont really expect any action today.

Looking pretty still at the moment, but expect a different picture tomorrow!

As always our cameraman will be at the event filming all the action, so don't worry, you wont miss anything!!

It's a sunny afternoon here in Rhosneigr as the slalom and wave competitors gather for an awesome weekend of wind & waves. Jamie Hawkins is getting his Exocet boards all ready, John Skye and Jamie Hancock are ready to battle in the port tack conditions against local favourites Phil Horrocks and Ben Proffitt.

The forecast is looking good (25knots SW with some ground swell) so it will all be about port tack jumping for the wave sailors which should mean some of the 'younger pros' (Graham Woods, Sam Neal, Rich Jones) should perform better than last week in the down-the-line conditions of Brandon Bay. Even 2008 Freestyle Champion Andy 'Bubble' Chambers is here hoping to do well in the wave contest.

The slalom sailors will definitely be flying which will suit Hawkins and the Baker boys who are up for the weekend. Ant is entering the slalom, Nik the waves. Rumour has it that Matt Pearch will also make an appearance - a rare treat for fellow UK competitors.

Plus a lot of the importers are bringing demo kit so try and get down here to watch the competition.

It looks like we will be starting early Saturday morning for the wave sailors with the slalom guys on the water late morning.

Live updated HERE throughout the weekend.

Saturday morning (9:25) and the wind is already cranking! Its pretty flat at the moment, but its looking good for waves on the turning tide.

It looks like 4.7 weather for the wave guys at the moment and slalom guys are rigging small. Matt Pearch is rigging 5.2 slalom sail ready for this afternoon!

Keep a check on conditions on the web cam here: [www.camserv.co.uk]

11:06 - Ok waves are picking up and amateurs (waves) are on in 30mins. Wave sailors are on the water on 4.0m sails and well powered up. Waves are about head high at best.

Slalom course is getting re-layed as the wind has gone slightly more Southerly. We expect slalom to start in around 20 mins.

Skye and Horrocks are entering the slalom on their wave kit....

Jackson wins heat 3 ahead of Phil Horrocks on wave gear (74 real world) - Phil boosted a massive (over double mast high) jump on the first reach off one of the outer swells just for fun....he is obviously confident!!

Clyde waite gives us a few words from the losers final of the amateurs:

"Its really hard work - super windy, but its sunny and great to be back in competition again!

Its full power 4.0m, decent sized waves. Great for jumping but tricky to get a good wave ride as its hard to find a wave that stays formed all the way to the beach.

I think we are going to see some massive jumps in the pros later!!"
