When did you start windsurfing and why?
When I was seven - my Dad is mad on the sport and it looked really good fun.
What kit did you first ever sail on?
Nautix 2.6 sail and a Hifly Matrix board. But then dad got me a JP Young Gun 114 board and a Gaastra 3.4 and I was soon planing in the straps. I was then selected for the JP Young Gun programme and moved on to the Young Gun 70 and a 3.5 and 4.0 Neil Pryde One sail.
When you first began, what did you find most difficult?
Beach starting, but I can now water start out of my depth.
“I know my Dad would prefer me to get into wave sailing as he's not that keen on carting me around to lakes where it's not windy but would love to have to take me to Tiree”
When did you join the West Kirby Warriors?
When I was 7 years old. We meet up every Friday night after school. The best thing is sailing with other kids who are mad about windsurfing. In West Kirby there are three other Ultrasport Young Gun sailors; Joash Knight, Tom and Sam Coldham. We all sail whenever it’s windy and have even been out at 7.00 am to catch the morning tide.
What's the biggest Team15 event you have been to?
It must have been the first T15 Inter Club event this season at Astbury Watersports in Cheshire . We beat the local Zone Champions on their home ground and I got two firsts - in the 4.5m class and for the first 4.5 m Bic Techno.
Have you sailed in waves yet?
Not that much but I want to do more. I've sailed at Rhosneigr on a quiet day and in Abersoch on a windier day. I'm starting to get out on the Estuary now in West Kirby. I'd like to sail over to Wales (across the estuary) during the summer. On holiday I've sailed in Brittany and in Tiree where I had my only lesson with a great instructor called Will on the lake there rather than in the waves.
What moves are you trying to learn this summer?
A vulcan. I love jumping and I’m already much better at it than my Dad who's been windsurfing for years. I also want to loop but mum's not that happy about me trying. I also love speed sailing next to the wall at West Kirby and have a GPS through the Young Gun scheme. I've clocked 24 knots so far. I'm not sure the board will go any faster but I would like to hit 30 knots.
What would you like to win most - the Olympics on your RSX board or the PWA Wave World Title on your custom board?
I race on a Bic Techno at the moment and really enjoy the T15 events. I was the youngest person ever to be selected for the Zone squad training this year. I'm hoping to be selected for the Zone squad again next year and do some more racing but I think that waves seem more fun so I would probably want to win the PWA World title. I know my Dad would prefer me to get into wave sailing as he's not that keen on carting me around to lakes where it's not windy but would love to have to take me to Tiree!
Who is your windsurfing idol?
Nik Baker was amazing at the Indoor Windsurfing Slalom event at the Boat Show. But then there is Darren Mitchell who sometimes sails at West Kirby and he came over last year and gave me lots of help.
If professional windsurfing doesn't work out as a career (!) what do you want to do?
Not sure - maybe a Marine Biologist so I can live and work near the sea.
