A Swift Word

It has been a couple of weeks since the Boardseeker Team asked me to write this column. I didn’t know that there would be too much to say this first month, but more has happened than I would ever have cared to imagine...

Celebrity Look-a-Likes

As we searched for Celebrity Look-a-Likes, it suddenly became glaringly obvious that our
very own all conquering rippers, the Moreno Twins, (Daida and Iballa), have a striking
resemblance to the chart conquering Cheeky Girls.

However whilst the Cheeky Girls have risen to fame through their song "Touch my Bum",
male sailors across the windsurf planet can only dream about one of the Morenos'asking them
that very same question.

Donkey of the month: Ross Williams

Last week Ross Williams and girlfriend Louise travelled from the Isle of Wight to Gatwick and checked onto a flight for Gran Canaria. After watching all 100kg of excess baggage disappear down the conveyor belt they went to relax in the departure lounge.

Unfortunately, they were so relaxed that they fell asleep and woke up to find that their entire luggage had been unloaded from the plane and the flight had gone without them!

After the embarrassing situation of explaining to the airport crew what had happened, they set about booking another flight. After some negotiation, they managed to book their way onto the next BA flight to Gran Canaria only to be told that they had to cough up £800 for excess baggage!

With no option but to leave the kit behind, Ross called upon the services of the Pearch family (Matt and Doug) who raced up the M23 from Shoreham to collect the equipment before departure, thus preventing the dynamic duo missing yet another flight!

Ross is now ‘training in the Canaries’ without any kit: what a donkey!

Switch Body Spock

Love them or loath them, you’ve got to admire these guys for taking freestyle to a higher and higher level each year. Now you need a Degree in Flexibility to be able to perform the latest ‘switch body’ moves.

Here’s Andre Paskowski from Germany showing off one of the first ever switch body spocks (Gozada).

Unfortunately Andre broke his hand shortly after performing this move for us, forcing him to miss the Euro freestyle event he was training for and spend 5 weeks off the water. We wish him a speedy recovery!

British Formula Team heading to Poland

The British Formula Windsurfing Team has just been select for the 2004 Formula Worlds in Leba, Poland.

The World Championships is the biggest event on the Formula calendar and will take place between the 2-8th of August this year.

Poland, surprisingly, is one of the most popular Formula windsurfing venues always delivering top quality events with the prize money to match. Local hero and Formula superstar Wojtek Brzozwski, fresh from winning the European Championships in Lake Garda, must be the hot tip for the event. Other hot tips will include current World Champion Steve Allen, PWA World Champion, Micah Buzianis and all-round windsurfing legend Antoine Albeau.

The Brits are also a force to be reckoned with. Christine Johnston is the current World Champion and Lucy Horwood vice World Champion.

In the men’s fleet, Ross Williams was probably denied of a Podium finish last year when his mast snapped and forced retirement in the last race.

This years RYA British Team has been announced as: Ross Williams, Jamie Lever, Keith Atkinson, Dan Ellis, Alan Jackson, Xavier Ferlet, Christine Johnston and Lucy Horwood.

We will let you know how they get on in the August issue or you can track their progress at www.formulawindsurfing.org
