A Swift Word

Robby Swift August was a month of mixed emotions for me. I had a couple of good results in the Canaries and a couple of really bad ones! Some fun times off the water and some pretty miserable times...

Donkey of the month:
Dave White

Off road dirt biking + best friend + competitive nature = cracked rib & punctured lung

Dave White has a reputation for maiming himself and spending at least several weeks a year in the care of the NHS. This time around, it was off road dirt biking that got the better of him.

Being Dave White’s kids means they have inherited his slightly mad streak and consequently persuaded their Dad that they would be nothing better then spending the weekends driving on new Haqvana and G H Motocycles around dirt tracks.

With all the protection gear money could buy, Dave kitted them out and off they went. However his first blunder was going to the track WITHOUT his protection gear which was still in the post.

The Mad White Clan!

They joined fellow Whiteboarder, Nik Greene at the track and Dave thought it wouldn’t hurt to take a quick spin around the track with his kids.

But then he got into a personal battle with Nicky boy.

So in Dave’s words:

”It was just down to time, sooner or later one of us would get it. I came out of a corner first and thought that extra burst of speed would keep me ahead. Once in the air it all went a bit sideways. I just had enough time to see Nik go around the jump in a bid to overtake me, so when I landed he was running along side and perfectly placed to see me ejected from the bike.

Having screwed myself a few times, I had a good idea what was wrong: a punctured lung due to a cracked rib. However no one at the local A&E was taking any notice of my diagnosis and after a night in hospital they discharged me despite my objections.

It took a few days and several complaints to doctors before the ambulance finally took me back to A&E. This time they were listening and it wasn’t long before they were draining blood from my lung. Three liters of blood and five days later I get to go home. Not sure which protection I needed most, from the bike or from the NHS!”

Sneak Preview: Arrows 2006 wave sail?

Spotted on the beach in Pozo and being sailed in the evenings by Pete Volwater and Ant Baker, we can only presume this is a prototype Arrows wave sail. It looks quite different from previous Arrows designs and the Arrows Team were trying desperately to keep it under raps, but nothing escapes the notice of the Boardseeker Team!

Irish Freestyle Nationals, Rusheen Bay, Galway

Rusheen freestyle frenzy.

Surfdock Team riders Oisin Van Gelderen and Gwilym Williams (a Rusheen local) did Surfdock proud, taking first and second overall at the event.

The event was held in the flat waters of Rusheen Bay, Galway and the conditions were pretty ideal with 15 to 20 knots for most of the weekend and super flat water.

Oisin won both finals with a smooth performance of spocks, switch stance moves and loops. Oisin’s training in Fuerteventura over the summer with Gwilym certainly paid off.

Other stand-outs include Daniel King's one-handed spock 540s, Nigel & Tim's smooth grubbies, brothers Simon and Finn Gormley, who are only 14 years old but pulling off flat water cheese rolls and the McGuire brothers (see a pattern emerging here?) whose spocks and forwards loops added to the Rusheen freestyle frenzy!

The Silver fleet was won by Alex Walshe and the Ladies by Noelle Doran.
