Where’s the wind gone?

Two major windsurfing championships have been let down by the wind. But the organizers still managed to get in some form of competition.

The PWA Nestea Race Series in Hungary: 1-5 Sept

The new girl: Pepe Mavrodieva (left). The fun race winner: Ross Williams

It nearly happened at Lake Balaton in Hungary as the wind threatened to pick up to 8 knots on the Sunday afternoon. But with too many lulls in the light breeze, the organizers ran a ‘fun race’ with 2,500 euros up for grabs. This was enough to get most of the fleet on the water and the Men’s was won by Ross Williams with current PWA Race Series leader, Steve Allen, in second.

Pepe who?
The surprise of the day was unknown, 19 year old Pepe Mavrodieva from Bulgaria whipping the other girls into place with her remarkable speed around the course.

She comfortable beat World Champion, Dorota Staszewska and PWA Race Series leader, Allison Shreeve. Expect to see more of the young Bulgarian.

IFCA Production Freewave Worlds in Gunicho, Portugal: 31 Aug - 4 Oct

Angulo rides away from the monster…

If only it had been a surfing contest! Massive 6m waves pounded Guincho beach on the Friday but not a breath of wind so a surf contest was called. 2003 PWA World Champion, Josh Angulo, rented a pop-out surfboard and led the contest from start to finish with his experience of many years surfing in Hawaiian waves.

The only UK entrant was John Skye, who got caught in the 5 knot current and dragged towards the cliff face! The rescue jet bike attempted to help him, but it soon came drifting back in without its driver! However, John’s experiences of getting drilled in the surf allowed him to survive unharmed as he was washed half way up the cliff to relative safety.

…and takes home his well deserved prize

No windsurfing, no result, but the sponsors, Overpower and Costa Do Estoril, were happy with the large crowds watching the surf contest and have agreed to fund the event next year. However, the event will take place earlier in August to have more chance of wind.

Hot off the press: John Skye and Charley Connelly WIN Bigbury

The Ladies winner, Charley Connelly

From warm, flat, freestyle heaven to Force 6 winds and head high swell, Bigbury provided ideal conditions in which to test the best of British.

Charley Connelly won every round in the Ladies fleet. The Youths was won by Chris Murray and the Juniors were won by Graham Woods. The Amateurs was won by Luke Baillie and the Masters by Brian Beasley. In the Pro fleet, John Skye took overall victory with Ben Proffitt in second and Chris Audsley in third. Full report next month.

Reef Competition!

Too much sea and sun has caused Melina's skirt to shrink!

Her friend Michelle has a spare one but she has gone missing.  Please help to find her and your reward could be a new pair of REEF shoes!

Congratulations to Albert Hunter who wins a pair of Reef sandals for his detective efforts in finding last month’s Reef girl in the event report section.

A new angle on windsurfing!

It’s not a head cam and it’s not a mast cam! This prototype camera is being developed by a kitesurfer from North Wales and Boardseeker were asked to try it out for windsurfing. The camera comes in a lightweight backpack and we think it will be a great teaching aid as well as a new view on what life is like for a windsurfer!

The camera is still in development and we shall keep you informed when it becomes available to buy.
