Unlucky Donkey of the Month

This is an unlucky tale and one which could happen to any Pro sailor but just so happened to the UK’s Ross Williams.

Having arrived in Pozo for a week’s training before the wave contest, Ross teams up with Robby Swift who picks him up from Las Palmas airport and straps his bags of Starboard/Gaastra wave kit onto the roof of Robby’s rather small hire car. After a session sailing at Pozo beach to wipe away the Charter flight aches and pains, priority is given to finding somewhere to store Ross’s kit before the contest.

(Only during the contest are sailors allowed to leave all their kit on the beach and security is duly provided.)

The garage of the local hostel is a good start and although reserved for hostel users, most sailors manage to squeeze in, especially the vocal Brazilian ones. But after much wrangling there was no room for Ross’s kit. With time getting on and stomachs rumbling, the pair headed up the road to the exclusive Gloria Palace Hotel in SanAugustin. Sailors can stay at this 4* hotel at a very cheap rate during the

contest and most take advantage of the sumptuous buffet and air conditioned rooms.

They managed to squeeze the hire car into the hotel car park but were told that they had to move it regardless of the gear on the roof.
They ended up parking outside the hotel complex and the hotel wouldn’t allow them to keep the gear anywhere else so it stayed on the roof. You can guess what happened next. Morning comes, they walk up the road to see hire car and no kit on the roof, not even the roof rack straps – everything robbed.

With no wave kit and no chance of borrowing an entire quiver for the contest from fellow Starboard/Gaastra riders, Robby took Ross back to the airport where he caught the next flight home. Insured? Most Pro’s don’t insure their kit as the rates are not economical when trying to get world wide cover.

Getting hold of a complete set of new kit + his custom boards? Not even a VISA card can sort that out in a hurry.

PWA: NEW JUMP SCORING for Pozo

  The ‘new school’ sailors
are having an impact on how wave heats are judged. At the PWA Pozo event last week, the judging of wave heats was changed for the first time in many years.

The change is designed to recognize the new school manoeuvres (such as shakas, air chachos, table top pushloops etc).

There were 2 big differences.
Firstly sailors were asked to perform 2 (and sometimes 3) different jumps rather than the traditional way of having to do one ‘forward rotating’ and one ‘backward rotating’ jump. This was designed to allow for more variety and also solved the dilemma of whether new school moves such as shakas are forward or backward rotating!

The second big change was that the PWA issued new Jumping Guidelines to include new school jumps.

Here is the new top10 of jumps:

1.
Double Back Loop, Push Loop Forward
2.
  Double Forward
3.
  Push Loop Table Top
4.
Table Top Forward, Air Chacho, Clew First Forward
5.
  Shakka, Back Loop
6.
Push Loop, Table Top, Crazy Pete
7.
  Forward
8.
  Cheese Roll
9.
  High Jumps
10.
  Long Jumps

PLEASE NOTE: no one has yet performed a double backloop and no one did a push loop forward in Pozo although we believe they have been done.
