The Heat Winning Move of 2006

The latest wave move comes courtesy of Boujamaa Guilloul. It’s basically a flaka off the lip and was invented some time ago by Japanese sailor Takaguchi Furamaya.  Problem was that it was too damn hard to pull off with any level of consistency.  Apparently though Boujamma and Kauili have now got them nailed - the old boys must be quaking in their seat harnesses!!

  NEW Bournemouth Beach!!

3 months of dredging, bulldozers working 24/7 and a million tonnes of sand later and Bournemouth has a massive new beach. High water is now a good 20-30 metres from where it used to be and with the waterline further out, the wind has become much more constant as it is less affected by the cliffs. At first the surfing break at Southbourne was ruined but it is now picking up again as the sea bed starts to take shape with the waves breaking further out. It also means that there are no breakwaters or groynes in the way of wave riding because they have been buried by sand.

The real reason for importing millions of tonnes of sand was to replace the beach that should have been there had a sea wall not been built in the late 19th century!!

Add this to the planned development of two surfing reefs at Boscombe and one at Southbourne designed to provide quality breaking waves, means that a once underrated cross onshore dumpy beach break is now going to be a quality reef break. Lucky for those living nearby…
