Attack of the Rocks

Watch as this poor helpless Italian gets sucked, chewed and swallowed by the rocks.  It shouldn't really be funny, but somehow it just is!

Spotlight on a Pro: Junko Nagoshi (J-11)

Junko is one of the few Japanese sailors on the PWA tour. She came to the limelight last year when she was winning the first women’s Super X at Lanzarote ahead of Karen Jaggi and the Moreno Twins until the very last race. Her incredible results for her first

year on the Tour earned her the PWA Rookie Of The Year title. Junko now lives on Maui & calls Hookipa her local break.

How old are you?

I am 30, a good age!

How many years have you been windsurfing?

Ten.

Where do you sail the most?

I train in Maui mostly. In the mornings I sail at Hookipa and in the afternoons I sail at Kanaha training in freestyle.

Was 2005 your first year on the PWA World Tour?

Yeah, I did a couple in 2004 - the Canadian Freestyle and a local event in Maui - but 2005 was my first year doing all the events.

You came very close to winning the first ever women’s Super X, did that surprise you?

Well it did a little bit, but actually I used to race a lot before wave sailing and I can also do all the tricks so it was just a case of putting the two together.

Do you think you can win the wave tour?

I don’t know, the waves are going to be difficult, but I will try. The Women’s Tour is really great now, at some events we had over twenty competitors. That is why I am doing it now.

What about freestyle?

Yes I will do the freestyle tour as well. I can spock on both sides and do the loops. I’m working on all the other moves for next year.

What were your results for 2005?

In the waves I came fifth, in freestyle also fifth and second in Super X - so it was a very good year for me.

56 Miles of Irish Luck

IWA Champ Oisin Van Gelderen is about to windsurf across the Irish Sea and in the process establish a speed record for the 56 mile Dublin to Holyhead route.

Oisin: "Over the years I have competed a lot in the UK, and I don't know how many times I have crossed the Irish Sea on the Stena Line HSS ferry and looked out at the conditions and wondered what it would be like to sail over myself.  Now thanks to RedBull, I have the opportunity to do exactly that.

By establishing a record, I am putting it out there for anybody to come and have a go at beating it. It will be officially timed by the WSSRC and if we are successful, the route will become an official 'World Record Route' that can be challenged by sailing craft under 20ft - meaning windsurfers, sports catamarans, 49ers, 18ft skiffs and of course kiters.

I am delighted that a good friend Dave Garvey from DMGsailsports.com will be providing safety cover. We have been training hard over the last 9 months in various sea conditions to see what’s ideal. Southerly, 15-20 knots is what we want, any windier and it makes it hard for the boat to keep up in the rough sea.
"

The plan is for Oisin to make the crossing in the next 4 weeks weather dependant. Watch out for the full report in the next issue

Shop & Surf

A London Property developer is planning a Surfdome surrounded by 50,000 square foot of shops. Rugby Estates plc has acquired the exclusive technological rights in the UK to create up to 8 foot high waves indoors. The shops will be surf related along with cafes & bars & restaurants. The developers are looking for a location in Eeast London.

Another option is then to include indoor surfing at the London Olympics as a non-medal event. One click of a computer button can conjure a wave from left or right, finished waves are then sucked back into the wave generator Also the pool floor reconfigures at the touch of a button creating artificial rocks for that reef break.

The theory is that anyone can have a go for between £25-35 an hour with max capacity of 20 boards at any one time (no localism allowed!!)

Dover to Calais in 1hr 17m

They did it! Youth sailors Rich Jones & Dan Simpson left Dover at 9am on Saturday 8 th April & landed in Calais 1 HOUR & 17 MINUTES later. In doing so they got the media interested in windsurfing, including the BBC, and raised a lot of money for the NSPCC and Oxford Children’s Hospital.

However they only just made it on their 7.8m sails & 125 litre boards as the wind was borderline. But once closer to Calais it picked up. (We told you it is always windier in France!) Well done boys!

Stop, look and listen

Not one to pass by a photo opportunity, Guy Cribb took full advantage of some poor Dublin car owners miss-fortunes on his recent clinic to Surf Dock, Ireland.

The highest tides of the year caused freak flooding along Dublin waterfront and allowed Guy to windsurf down the main road, past swamped cars, taking care not to break the speed limit.
