Spotlight on a Pro: Sergey Mikheev (R-13)
| |
Twenty year old Sergey was the first Russian Pro Freestyler we had ever met! So we found a translator, had a chat & then filmed him sailing whilst he was training in Egypt.

Where do you come from?
I was born in central Russia, near Moscow, but in 1993 (aged 7) I moved with my parents to Anapa on the Black Sea coast of Caucasus. This is where I first tried windsurfing with my father.
Do many people sail there?
Yes, it is very popular for windsurfing although the winter months can be a bit cold. There aren’t that many young freestylers but hopefully having the PWA Super X event in October this year will get young people into it.
So why are you here in Egypt?
Well, as I said it is very cold in the winter & early spring so I have to go to a warmer climate to practice. However, I am still at college in Russia. I am training to be a Coach in Sport. It is a flexible programme that allows me to work away from home and is tailored to whatever sport you excel in. I have to go home for examinations every now and again though!
What’s it like trying to get sponsorship as a Russian sailor?
It’s very hard because the market is so small in Russia so the ONE importer doesn’t sell enough kit to justify paying me lots of money!! I am sponsored through him so at the moment he imports Ezzy Sails, Angulo Boards and Quiksilver clothes but next year it could be different so I never quite know what I will be sailing on! I rely a lot on my parents to do this and any prize money I win at Russian competitions and now international ones.
So what’s the plan for 2006?
I will do the PWA Canarian events like last year and just see how far I can get.
What moves do you want to have sorted by then?
Anything with doubles in it! Double spocks, double chachos and my favourite; double punetas.
(Thanks to translator Eugene Krivosheev for helping us out on his holiday!)
