Playing with JAWS

When Jaws is working, it always makes for amazing footage but this is something even more special as Jason Polakow & Robby Naish play together on the monster wave. They call it ‘crossing over’, we call it lunacy! This footage is courtesy of Naish.tv and produced by SEEGERPOWERPLAY

We introduce……Egor Popretinskiy, RUS-11

The Russians are slowly beginning to establish a presence on the freestyle scene. A few issues back we profiled Sergey Mikheev and now we’ve found an even younger, double spocking wunderkid.

Egor Popretinskiy:
Win [1.17MB]
Mac [1.2MB]

  Age: 19
Local Result: Russian National Winter Cup Champion 2006
Current EFPT Ranking: 23rd
Sponsors sail: JP, Neil Pryde & O’neill.

Mini-Profile: Although Egor started off racing as a Junior, he soon realized that because he had been skating since he was five, his talents would be more suited to freestyle. So, aged 14, he competed in Yesk on the Black Sea. He came 12th out of seventeen – not bad. The following year after some training in Egypt, he won the Youth fleet at the Russian National Winter Cup with a speed loop & a duck gybe and came 12th in the adults – getting better! Then in 2003, his parents saved up to send young Egor to Maui. He mastered the spock & diablo and also met up with fellow Russians, Sergey Mikheev (RUS-13) and Eugene Urtayev (RUS-211). 2004 and this time Egor finishes third at the Winter Cup. But it’s really time to compete outside his home country, so he heads back to Egypt and sails like a crazy man!

As Egor says:

‘Egypt wasn’t Hawaii (!) but I sailed every day, earned money from windsurfing lessons, learned how to live my own life and work out how I can became a professional rider’

2006 and Egor competes on the EFPT Tour in Greece & Turkey with his best result a 7th at the Red Bull King of the Bay in Alacati.
The guy is getting better but Egor & Sergey need your help! If you would like to help fund their windsurfing career and get publicity for your company in Russian & Europe then email: info@boardseeker.com.

The Tour Duf:
1 event, 6 days, 6 beaches

Hugh Sims-Williams explains…

This event, based in Brittany & held every August, consists of 6 stages a bit like the Tour de France, with each day being run from a different beach. They even have a
trophy for the evening activities: the Maillot Jaune is given to the person that can party the hardest each night. Windsurfing 6 days in a row, with 2-3 races per day and 5 big nights out with the French nearly killed me! Thank goodness the first possible race start was always 2pm.

Mr Sims Williams
Although the French Olympic Team were competing, the real attention was given to the “Loisir” (the “leisure” fleet) which consisted of tandems, old boards like Lechner’s, Div2’s & hybrid fleets.

Now that's a vessel!

Stage 1: SAINT MARINE

Conditions: Offshore 12-18 knots, sunny

Popular sandy beach with a night club!

Stage 2: LECHIAGAT

Conditions: 12-25 knots gusty offshore, sunny.

A small bay surrounded by rocky islands made for a lake like feeling whilst being on the sea.

Stage 3: AUDIERNE

Conditions: Offshore, 10-16 knots, sunny, freezing sea temp!

Today there was an Exocet sponsored slalom event with every entrant on Exocet/Pryde kit. With eight in each heat, this fun event encouraged cheating and the sabotage of fellow competitors – very funny to watch!

Stage 4: SAINT PABU

Conditions: 6-12 knots cross shore.

Here we raced around big rocks in shifty conditions with 4 knots of current. Result – one destroyed fin.

Stage 5: PLOUGEURNEAU

Conditions: Offshore and rather stormy, 4-18 knots with downpours.

A Scar music concert was put on until midnight when the disco opened. Not quite sure how they manage to have so many discotheques next to some very remote beaches!

Stage 6: ROSCOFF

Conditions: Offshore 6-12 knots, tidal.

We raced around some islands just offshore. A great place to end the regatta as it meant we could just jump on the ferry home the next morning.

Prize giving:
This was a pretty major affair with the mayor of the town visiting and providing drinks for everyone. The sponsors had donated some pretty awesome prizes; three surfboards, a windsurfer, a sail and several masts. These prizes were not for the winners though but given away though a lottery and everyone got some sort of prize. I won some oven gloves provided by the food sponsor!

Overall there is no better way to see a country than to windsurf from a selection of its beaches. The French were extremely welcoming and great fun and I feel we really gained an insight into the culture as well: now I can honestly say I like Techno music!!

Elliot Carney, Hugh & an 80 year old Frenchman who was competing!

Hugh is sponsored by O’Neill, Windsurfer’s World, Starboard and Tushingham.
