UK Freestyle Finals

Where: Poole Windfest
When: Fri 15th September
UK Freestyle Champ 2006: Andy Chambers

Poole Harbour is notoriously hard for freestyle even for the UK’s best. But with a dire weekend forecast, the organisers decided to head over the road from the beach and run the Freestyle Finals in the choppy harbour. Also on offer was a different format; instead of 5 minute heats it was similar to the London Boat Show with sailors performing one trick, one at a time in front of the judges. It was really no surprise that the Club Vass boys, Andy Chambers & Simon Hurrey, racked up the points with complicated tricks. Ben Proffitt had been out in Egypt practising hard before the event and came in third. Here are their best moves:

Poland is famous for producing hot racers (Dorota Staszewska, Wotjek Brzo-

zowski…) but now the Poles are emerging in the freestyle fleets and one who has made an impression this season is 19 year old Jakub Kosmowski. He is currently placed 7th on the EFPT Tour and at his first PWA event in Fuerte, beat Pozo wave champ Victor Fernandez in a thrilling freestyle heat.

When was your first competition and how did you do?

My first contest was at EFPT event in Hyeres, France. I finished 9th and was quite happy with that.

What has been your highlight from the 2006 competition season so far?

My first PWA contest in Fuerteventura (where Jakub beat Pozo wave champ Victor Fernandez). I had some bad heats and some very good heats but in the end I was quite happy about that. I'm now fighting for a good final result on the EFPT Tour.

What would you say is your signature move?

A Gozzada Clock. Apparently I was the first rider to do one in a competition heat on the EFPT Tour in Prasonisi.

Where do you train for freestyle and where do you train for waves?

My favourite spot for freestyle is Brazil but mainly I train in Dahab. In January I’m going to Cape Town to improve my wave skills. But for sure it's going to be funny to watch because I have never trained in waves before!

Windsurfing seems very popular in Poland - why is this?

Formula windsurfing is really popular because of Wojtek and Dorota – they have a big following.

There is a Polish Windsurfing Association but unfortunately they are not into freestyle at all. If we want a Polish Championship we have to organise it ourselves but hopefully in the next few years freestyle will become just as popular as racing and we will see more riders and events in my home country.

What's your advice for any young sailor wanting to become a Pro windsurfer?

Train hard but have fun doing it otherwise you can’t train 100%!
