Shark Corner

To celebrate the start of the Cape Town & Western Oz season we thought we would bring you two little features guaranteed to question that recently booked flight.

Gnarloo Gnasher

Firstly, the shark incident at Gnarloo in Western Oz. Over to Old Git from the Seabreeze Forum for the tale:

“I was at the 3 mile camp when the incident happened. One of the Geraldton locals sailed out from the key hole at the camp on Friday afternoon in light winds. He was out the back of the bommie and his board stopped suddenly and he was thrown forward onto his sail. A shark around 8 feet had bitten the back of the board leaving a teeth marks the size of a large dinner plate. I can confirm this as I saw the board afterwards. The guy ended up with grazes down his legs from the abrasive skin of the shark. In the confusion they separated and he managed to waterstart and head back in. One of the fishermen saw the board and made the comment it was red and white like the most popular lure in Australia and it was no surprise to him that a big fish would be interested in it being trawled through the water at around 8 knots. Everyone at the camp was in a state of shock for about 5 minutes and then went sailing again. Mind you the surf line-up was pretty quiet the next day”

Yes, those marks are what you are thinking! (Click on image to enlarge)

Is this a shark?

Secondly, we have found this gem of a picture of British sailor Matt Wemms at Sunset Beach. Nice aerial, but can you spot something in the background on the right? Shark or kelp? You decide…

First EVER Norwegian Wave Champs!

When 6-8 October
Where Refsnes Beach, nr Stavanger, Norway
Winner Vidar Jensen

The first ever Norwegian Championship in waves and freestyle was held outside Stavanger on the Norwegian south west coast. We asked top Norwegian windsurfer, Hans Kristian Waarum, all about it:

Why has it taken till 2006 to have the first ever Norwegian windsurfing Wave Champs?

I think it has taken so long because in Norway there is a rule that you need to have at least 30 sailors to apply to the Sailing Foundation to have an official Norwegian Championship. We’ve had a contest for 20 years now called Jæren Wave, but not before last year did we have over 30 sailors registering for the event. That’s why we could have an official contest this year. We were also lucky to have PWA Judge Thijs von der Meer with us this time as head judge.

Is there any racing competition in Norway?

Yes, there is a lot of racing going on in Norway. We have the Norwegian Formula Cup and two or three slalom events every year.

Is the beach that the event was held on the beach to wave sail in Norway?

The direction we had for the contest was a little too onshore, but Refsnes is the place that we sail the most. It works on both south and northerly winds, and actually has two reefs that give down-the-line conditions in both wind directions.

Vidar & Orjan Jensen are the most famous Norwegian windsurfers but they live in Gran Canaria. How often do they get back to Norway to compete?

The Jensens don’t spend much time in Norway but they came here for the Jæren Wave last year. I think this time Vidar and Ørjan were very keen on getting the national title – that’s why they came.

So other than the Jensens, who also rips it up for Norway?!

Well Rolf Gregersen, who came third, is not professional but has been driving a lot to Varberg in Sweden to sail and also spent some time in South Africa this winter.

As for me (I came fourth) I have been competing in the PWA this season in the wave events. Also I am going to be in the Red Bull Storm Chase together with Ørjan Jensen this Autumn. After that I go to Chile and maybe  Maui in April. So you can say that I am a half professional at the moment although I also study religion this semester as well as making a windsurfing DVD – I’m a busy guy!

RESULTS

1st Vidar Jensen
2nd Ørjan Jensen
3rd Rolf
4th Hans Kristian Waarum

The contest was sponsored by srfsnosk8, and the organiser of the event was Sola Brettseilerklubb.
