TWO Prestigious endorsement’s for Weymouth Speed Week

Weymouth Speed Week 2007 is to be the host of the British Speedsailing Championships.
The world's longest-running speed event has been endorsed by the UK Windsurfing Association to hold the British Championships from 2007 onwards. It is a big step forward for the event, which has also gained recognition this week from the International Speedsailing Association and will be on the calendar for the World Series.

Competitors will benefit from great prizes and by being able to gain ISA points in the world ranking. Weymouth Speed Week organiser Pete Davis said: "Weymouth Speed Week is historic in windsurfing terms because it is the longest-running speed event in the world.”It was the first place 30 knots was broken by Fred Haywood back in the late 70’s” Now it's the British Championships. He added that the name would 'absolutely not' change despite the Event’s growing prestige, But would benefit from a greater profile on the World stage.
Now in its 35th year, WSW 2007 is taking place at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy from October 1 to 7th, the closest time to the Autumn Equinox and the best chance of wind.

Pete added:

"Last year we were blessed with fantastic wind and sun and it was the best Weymouth Speed Week ever.
"We broke four harbour records. Including the Overall harbour record by Nigel Bowley a Kitesurfer (so there will be some scores to settle there) and another long standing one was the ladies' harbour record, by Pete’s wife Zara, which had stood for 21 years."

Entries for this year's event will start from March 1st at www.speedsailing.com - it is limited to approximately 120 sailors and operates on a first. come, first-served basis.

Donkey of the Month - Jan Sleigh

This month’s donkey is Jan Sleigh who is currently on a trip round the north west of Ireland with fellow windsurfer Kit Brogan. Why is he a Donkey? Well first run off the beach on day one he
managed to let a wave use his equipment as a guillotine on his head.

Jan explains: “This was our first day in the North West of Ireland and local windsurfer William Kelly had very kindly offered to take us to a couple of spots. At the first beach the wind was almost bolt off shore so we decided to chance a more remote location where the wind would be side offshore. When we got there we were astounded at the beauty of the place as well as the full force of the Atlantic pounding the shoreline

with mast high waves. Despite the temperature being about 8 degrees, Kit was rigged up and out pretty quick and he scored a couple of nice big waves before I got on the water. I was powered up on my 4.7 Boxer,

popped a forward off the first wave and feeling confident then headed out back where I just lost all wind just in front of a nice big set which took hold of my gear and dumped it on top of me. When I surfaced I was pretty sure I’d hit myself hard but didn’t check until I was safely ashore. As I walked up the beach the wind was blowing blood off my face and onto the sail so I knew I was bleeding. William and Kit came to my aid straight away and I went and got warm in the van and compressed the wound while they carried on windsurfing. Then we hatched a plan to get me stitched up and windsurfing again asap!”

If you do get an injury like this, get off the water and compress the wound to stop the bleeding. Then get yourself off to hospital straight away. However if you are fortunate enough to be traveling with a fellow windsurfer who is a Doctor then you can avoid the wait at A&E and get yourself stitched up in the comfort of your own (or someone else’s home).

Normally Slayer's not the one receiving the wounds...

POZO Cars launched by Daida Moreno

When it comes to understanding the hire-car requirements of the travelling windsurfer (roomy reliable cars with roof-rack at an affordable price), who could have more experience than a Professional Windsurfer?

Well that’s what Daida Moreno thought, and decided to start her very own company in Gran Canaria which, of course, could only be called Pozo Cars.

You can choose from a fleet of Volkswagen Polos, Caddys or Transporter vans by clicking on the website: www.pozocars.com, or for more information email info@pozocars.com

Angulo Style!

Josh Angulo is certainly the man of the moment, winning his home event in Cabo Verde in fine style, which followed on from also winning the Aloha Classic in Maui at the end of last year. He is currently looking like the strongest contender to win this year’s PWA Wave World Championships, as he is certainly no slouch when it comes to the tricker conditions aswell. Though with the younger more ‘freestyle’ based sailors like Kauli Seadi breathing hard down his neck, anything can happen at events like Pozo if Josh does not get the right conditions to show off his powerful aerial style.

In Boardseeker Issue No. 017, we asked you to vote for your favourite board graphics, and Angulo boards also come out as the winner! So we thought it would be only fitting to show you the Angulo family’s latest graphic offerings, on the new Chango Wave and Sumo freeride boards. They certainly look like they will be another standout on the water this year.
