The Marcilio Mistral Movie
We think that Mistral are rather smug with their new signing. The boy is ripping on the Mistral kit and is definitely bringing a new, radical edge to the brand.
Here are his latest exploits from Brazil:

19 April 2007
Report by: Mike La Franchie
From Dunedin to Whangarei, New Zealand’s best wave sailors trickled into Taranaki to prove their worth at the 2007 Carbon Art New Zealand Wave Nationals. The event started off with small swell and light winds at Weld road which made a nice welcome back / introduction to the legendary Taranaki coastline for competitors who travelled to compete.

Spencer ripping it up as usual
Of the four possible competition days, Friday and Sunday saw conditions good enough to complete one full round of competition resulting in Clayton Dougan winning the NZ National wave sailing title. The 2007 competition was almost a mirror image of the 2005 final with Clayton Dougan and Chris La Franchie going head-to-head in the final. Port tack in 2007 and starboard tack in 2005, but the result was the same both times.
Both competition days saw a nice clean ground swell with light wind, giving an advantage to light sailors and those with big equipment. These conditions made for a good test of surfing ability as there was very little drive from the sail when turning, and positioning in the critical section of the wave was necessary to generate speed. The competition this year showed a very high standard of wave riding and some unexpected early knockouts. Conditions were port tack riding on both days with no jumping, which are the favored conditions for many locals. This was reflected in the results with seven of the eight semi-finalists being able to call Taranaki home.
Congratulations to Jill Cooper for sailing well and taking home the woman's title. But come on girls, get your act together and give her a challenge next year.
Thanks to Carbon Art for organizing, judging and providing post sailing entertainment. The commitment and support Carbon Art are continuously giving windsurfing within New Zealand was reflected by the number of sailors choosing the brand. It was great to see so many of the top sailors shredding on their locally made, hand built boards.

THE Windsurfing Movie

Due for it’s worldwide premier on May18th at the Defi Wind event in France, The Windsurfing Movie is poised to become windsurfing’s defining film. Directed by award winning cinematographer Johnny DeCesare of Poor Boyz Productions and featuring the best riders in windsurfing history, (Robby Naish, Levi Siver, Jason Polakow & 12 year old Kai Lenny to name a few) The Windsurfing Movie conveys the beauty of windsurfing in brilliant 16mm film.
What was originally a grass roots endeavour has grown into the biggest film project in windsurfing history, destined for big screen mainstream movie theatre release. The movie aims to bring windsurfing into the world spotlight and showcase the sport as it rightly deserves.
One of the lucky riders showcased, Levi Siver explains:
| |
“The movie is aimed to be an experience that a 13-year-old kid and my grandmother could enjoy at the same time. The focal point of the film is the story, and the windsurfing will be the icing on the cake. We want to give the audience more than just windsurfing; we want to give them an emotional ride with the star characters.
The characters are real, the action is real and the story is real. There are parts of the film that might have a documentary feel to it, and there will be character build up through out the story, such as the way you will feel connected to the likes of Robby Naish and Polakow, myself and others.
Our motivation? Well can you remember the last time you went into a theatre to see a windsurfing movie? Exactly. We want to gather all the windsurfer's around the world and have them share a similar experience about how amazing our sport is, how we all relate, and how everybody's stories are connected in a certain way.
We want the viewer to sit and eat popcorn and be pulled in like when you watch high impact productions such as surfing achieved with ‘Riding Giants.’ But windsurfing I believe has an edge that is more captivating than other sports, and that's what will come across to make it different from ‘Day of Days’ or ‘Riding Giants’. |
