“Getting Competitive”
This month I guess I have really started to focus
on competitive windsurfing. I came to realise that
messing about with light wind manoeuvres, whilst
obviously commendable and good training ground,
is just not going to cut it. Well, outside the
pond of your local break anyway, and what with
the accolade of getting sponsored, I am definitely
after some Moreno magic!
After receiving the great news last month that Fairclaims
was going to buy 3 new sails for me, I received the
double whammy that Ultrasport have decided to make
me a team rider. I can now be found alongside the
best of them with sponsorship from JP, Neil Pryde
sail and wetsuits and Electric sunnies! It is probably
understating things to say that I am pleased, because
I am absolutely ecstatic!! So it was with a sense
of excitement and nerves that I went down to Christchurch
over the bank holiday weekend, for the UKWA Freewave
Event, to meet with my sponsors and found out exactly
what the competition is...
This was preceded by a short conversation with
Louise (Boardseeker Editor): "You should compete
and I'll film you". Uh oh! The time had come
to deliver the goods! |

Sponsoship: as easy as that!

Since my time on the water is limited with my job,
I've come to prepare for entry on the competition scene
a bit like I was revising for an exam at school. Think
strategy, stick with a few things that you can guarantee
to pull off, have a routine and a back up plan!
So Saturday came and I went at the boxes of my new
sails, boards, masts and other veritable goodies like
it was Christmas and got it all stickered up! Making
my way down the beach with all the shiny, spangly kit
I was feeling a little self-conscious (not like me!!)
and thought the only way round this was to give it
some gusto. So out I blasted and went straight for
a forward! I landed face first on my sail but received
a whoop of appreciation from a passing Ben Proffit.
Nice.
Well I was thinking there should be about 3 or 4
girls and I would give it a shot. Cue Trevor Funnell: "Sorry
Luc, only you and Louise, you'll have to enter the
men's heat"
"Eh?" I thought. Hmmm I think I might actually WATCH an event first
before taking on the boyz! Talking of which, full courage to Louise who said, "yup,
alright then..."
Since then I have been on a video frenzy in the evening
and have been watching highlights of the PWA in Sotavento
- kindly taped by my mum! How good are those guys?
SO now my first event is at Hove in Brighton on the
4/5 September and I am prepared and ready! And at least
being my "localish" beach I might
have some insight!
It might well be a case of getting down with the
boys, in which case expect some carnage!!
Till next time...
Lucy is NOW an Ultrasport team rider and
is sponsored by: Neil Pryde, JP Australia, Neil
Pryde Wetsuits, Electric Sunglasses and Fairclaims.
