5. How long will it take to get good?

A hard one to answer, but we have tried our best!

Please don't think we can tell you that you are going to be the next British Champ in 2007, but there is a chance you can be.  There is no set time that it takes to get up and going, you just have to stick at it!!!  Remember that every kitesurfer has to go through the stages you are before they get good.   The first thing to say is that you are on to a winner!

Kitesurfing is a much easier sport than it used to be. There are so many good schools around, good riders to give you tips and great advise that can be found on forums.  Also equipment has improved dramatically and you can now expect to be blasting up and down much quicker then the guys 3 or 4 years ago.

What we say is 'determination is the key.'  Kitesurfing won't come to you over night.  You have to stick at it and keep trying.  For every challenge that sets you back there is a new brain cell developed that allows you to handle it better and after a while you will conquer that challenge.  For example, the more waves that knock you off balance when you are trying to water start the more you learn how to handle it and the sooner those waves will stop posing a threat.  Take it on the chin and it won't be long before it all certainly clicks into place!

Get the right equipment, pump up the kite so the struts and leading edge are all really solid and make sure everything is in working order.  When there is no wind or you can't get to the beach watch some beginners dvd's and do something else to keep you fit.  All this will prepare you for when you do hit the water and it will help you to improve much faster.

It’s too hard!! Top tips to keep you at it:

  • Accept it’s a challenging sport requiring a combination of skill, balance, co-ordination and fitness.
  • If you are tired you will make silly mistakes so STOP!
  • Don’t stay out all day. Set yourself a realistic goal to achieve and come in regularly for a little break, some food and water.
  • Tears, tantrums and swearing are acceptable but don’t bash your kit (you will come off worse) and don’t hit your instructor, especially if it’s your other half!
  • DO compare yourself to others! If someone is doing really well, watch them, ask them and try and copy what they are doing!
  • Try and get someone to video you. It will really help you see what you’re doing wrong (and right) and will provide hours of entertainment for your family.
  • Watch Instructional DVD's, like Fluid Edge with Mike Smith, when you have some spare time.
  • When you reach big goals get more coaching to help you to the next stage.  You are never too good for coaching!
