On February 1st 2008, Nayra Alonso broke her foot whilst training in Cape Town. At the time it felt like a total disaster for the Spanish superstar as her training plans, photoshoots and possible 08 competition season were all in question.

Move on five months and the girl is back!

But it wasn’t easy.

1st Feb - Cape Town

11:30 I have a fun session at the Lake, but I feel pretty tired.

14:30 I have a rubbish session at Melkboss, still tired.

16:30 Mega tired now, but it is windy and wavy at Sunset beach so I have to keep training.

18:00 I break my foot whilst landing a pushloop, it hurts a bit but I don’t realize. De-rig, go home.

20:30 Nobody at the (Boardseeker) house thinks it’s broken therefore very little sympathy. Jem Hall helps me ice it up but I am now in real pain.

21:00 We go to hospital, just to make sure nothing is broken.

23:00 Confirm: it is broken and I might need to have it operated on. Have to re-check on Monday with the Orthopaedic doctors.

"I break my foot whilst landing a pushloop, it hurts a bit but I don’t realize..."

4th Feb

11:00 Visit the specialists who say there is no need to operate and they put on a removable cast.

5th-12th Feb

I become John Skye’s official camera girl. My foot stinks but I can’t wash it as it is too painful.

Home to Gran Canaria...

13th Feb

11:00 Back home and I visit Doctor No.1: Yes, broken. Yes, no need to operate. Sorry, we are putting you on a permanent cast.

16:00 Visit Doctor No.2: Yes broken and no need to operate but why did they put you in a permanent cast?!

14th Feb

10:00 Remove the permanent cast and put back the removable one.

12:00 Start therapies with the sport Doctor Javier Hernandez Campos and his physiotherapy team (Javier Iglesias).

15th-25th Feb

9:00-11:30 Physiotherapy, magneto therapy, ultrasounds...everything to speed recovery.

25th Feb

9:30 Foot x-rayed and Doctors not happy. The bone is not healing and is moving.

11:00 Check with surgeon bone specialist. We NEED to operate urgently. I am so scared.

28th Feb

06:00 I am dressed in sexy hospital pyjamas.

13:00 Finally they take me to the op room and I get some drugs, I am quite chirpy now! ‘Operate as much as you want’, I tell the doctor.

14:30 Back in the room. All good, all done, still high!

20:00 Finally got some food. Pain starts to kick in. Ask for drugs! Wake up next morning at 10am.

2nd Mar

11:00 They send me back home. The post op cast weighs a ton and it is so painful. I get drugs. I sleep.

5th -13th Mar

11:00 I am sick. Flue. This is great! Foot really painful, defences’ too low, temperature, head ache, body ache. My friends come around pretty much every day which is cool

Out of cast...

14th Mar

11:00 Second check at hospital. They take my stitches out and take the cast off. I start rehab again; physio + gym to keep rest of body fit.

16th Apr

9:00 My first steps without any crutch. I am so over the crutches. This feels amazing!

22nd Apr: Hospital check

10:00 Back at hospital. All good. Green light to walk without crutches and start proper exercising.

26th Apr: First swims in the ocean. God, I missed it!

In the sea!

"No feet in the footstraps or anything, but feels good. I’m on my way back!"

10th May: UK

I get onto the water on an SUP at the UKWA Wave event at Rhosneigr. There is no wind but I was there to support John and hang out with the Boardseeker crew and thank them for being so sympathetic when I broke my foot (ha ha!)

16th May: Gran Canaria

They let me go surfing at home. I am so scared I crash every wave. No worries, it is good to just be out sitting on my board.

18th May

First time sailing. No feet in the footstraps or anything, but feels good. I’m on my way back!

19th May – June 16th

I keep sailing. It hurts, but little by little I get better and get back into the waves at Vargas and Pozo. I try some freestyle but too painful.

22nd June

I decided to not enter the PWA Lanzarote Freestyle event. I can’t even spock yet.

22nd- 30th June

Sic wave sailing in Vargas. I am the happiest girl in the world! Got a bit more confidence, started to jump AND got some footage to make a little video. My foot is not so painful anymore and I am getting nervous about the Pozo competition but I’m back!!!
