The PWA is coming back to El Yaque, Margarita in just a few short weeks. The riders, organisers and all the locals are eagerly awaiting the event, the buzz on the island is incredible and shows just how much of an impact windsurfing can have.
Boardseeker have caught up with Tom Brendt to find out the behind the scenes stories ahead of the event, plus we have some incredible galleries, also from Tom, of the island’s top freestylers (click their name to go straight to their gallery):

With eight PWA Freestyle World titles and some more Runner Up trophies making the homes of the El Yaque freestylers look prettier, the remaining dream of all El Yaque pro windsurfers has always been to finally host a PWA event at home, a dream that so far never came true…’til now.
It took the work and initiative of those riders to make it all happen and now it’s only few weeks to go before the event kicks off, even if there still isn’t a 100 % confirmation on the final date.
More than being just a dream there’s much more behind it all; there’s this hope that El Yaque might become what it once was: a mecca for freestyle competitors and travelling windsurfers. Those times have seemed to be over for the last few years, but after the Movie “El Yaque – town of Champions“, which has been all over the Venezuelan cinemas and with the PWA coming down to the most southern Caribbean island things seem on the up. The village in the south of the Island of Margarita wants to shine and wants to be a very good host. Urban artists have started to paint and provide the main roads with their artworks, big cleaning is in process, palm trees are bending in the wind and sand is flying where ever you walk.
Above all, everybody, including all El Yaque kids, are back windsurfing! They’re going crazy on the water and the actual EL Yaque PWA pros are training harder than ever to come out with a good result at their home turf, knowing very well that all the other competitors have already been training hard all over the world.
Three time World champion Ricardo Campello, who put his focus only on waves is back on his freestyle gear and it looks like he never did anything else in the past years. Five time World champion Gollito Estredo has once again started to push the limits, with Campello in his neck no wonder…. Yoli de Brendt got some new local female competition even though she’s training more and more to close the gap on the guys.
So far it’s all set for an amazing competition, we are just waiting for one final confirmation.
FYI as there are no more international flights to the Island of Margarita, flights must be booked to Caracas and than further to Margarita / Porlamar. For further travel and accomodation info head to – elyaquenews.com and vivaelyaque.com
