Caesar Finies is very well known in the industry and perhaps the greatest light wind freestyler there is. Having released a video just a few days ago that has already caught the attention of thousands, we wanted to catch up with this master of light wind to find out a little more. So here are a few tips for things to try on a light wind day and check out his video on the next page.
Over to Caesar…
A couple of tricks that I teach at first are: backwind sailing, clew first sailing , sail body 360 , heli tack, chacho throw, pivot (flare) jibe, push tack, duck jibe , duck tack , etc…
The ideal conditions are no waves wind speed from 12 knots to 16 knots.
I have a starboard Rio 180L and works good with a 10cm fin. Sail size I started with a 4.0 for more control of the power, but I started using the 4.4 North Sails Idol Ltd for more control and smoothness. It is more forgiving also when I need in a little more power so you don’t fall back. I have a full carbon mast and full carbon boom to have a stiff setup and light.
How to Rig the Sail
I rig the sail pretty flat so it responds to the wind better from both sides. So lots of tension on the outhaul and just enough to make the sail tight on the downhaul, so that the leech isn’t too loose.
