Boardseeker caught up with the winner of the single elimination to chat about his win and the possibility of still becoming the world champion.
Boardseeker: Steven, congratulations, one of the most talked about heats of today was the one you had against Kiri, you stomped some incredible moves, how was it?
Steven Van Broeckhoven: Yeah I opened with the double culo and I was happy with it but knew I had a lot left ahead of me. I also knew Kiri saw it because he was behind me and maybe this would help a bit. Later I got the pushloop in front of the judges and this really fired me up, then I was really motivated and knew I could do it so I got the pasko and really felt I had won then.
Boardseeker:You already knew you had to win this to stand any chance of the title, do you know how it has to pan out now?
Steven Van Broeckhoven: Actually, no I wasn’t sure, I mean I knew kind of how it had to be but I was chatting with the live stream guys and we worked out that Kiri must win against Gollito and then if he makes it through I must win to take the title.
Boardseeker: You could face anyone of the top guys tomorrow, who do you think will come through?
Steven Van Broeckhoven: I really don’t know, I don’t want to say anyone because I really think any of them could come through, the level is really high now and you have to sail a good heat to even just have a hope of passing.
Boardseeker: Finally, in the live stream the guys were asking who you think could be the next ‘new face’ in the top 5 in future years?
Steven Van Broeckhoven: Yeah that’s a really hard question, I’m not ready to step down and I don’t want to say anyone in particular because there are a lot of good guys and sometimes one person goes to train full power and suddenly they are making their way through some good heats. If I had to I think one of these guys it is Youp Schmit, maybe the other is someone like Adrien Bosson, he was on fire at some of these events recently, but there are so many others, it’s hard to say.
