Real men in the pool

Bob Shermadine and Martin Latham are both amateur windsurfers and have both just had a go at sailing in the Indoor pool.

You may be wondering how they managed to wangle that when many of the Worlds top sailors cant even get an entry to the indoor event…… Well its all thanks to Christchurch windsurfing shop Spot On Water.

Mark from Spot on Water organised the very first UK Super-X event back in the summer and the amateur prize was a go in the London Indoor pool!!  Bob and Mark won the prize and here is what they had to say about their pool experience:

Martin Latham

After getting tips for the pool from Josh Angulo and Skyeboy, we were queuing up with the worlds best, the place every windsurfer dreams of being.

The pool all seemed to happen in a flash, down the ramp and by the time I\’d thought about it I\’d already reached the end of the pool and attempted a vulcan. Very gusty, very fast and very different from windsurfing outsite.

You watch the tv clips and see the pro\’s struggling, but until you try it, you don\’t realise how hard it is (and how tight the likes of Nik Baker can gybe). However we both managed the daunting launch fine and despite the pride I normally take in my gybes, I found myself in the water downwind before I knew it. Overall, similar to trying to do a manouvre in about 2 metres of water, the kind which you never land! Great experience recommended to all.

Bob Shelmedine

i\’ve seen the pros get humiliated in that pond, and sure as hell we got a spanking!  The wind hits with a hammer blow at the bottom of the ramp.  I managed the launch ok, sheet out leaning well forward ready to explode on hittting the water!!

Give it a couple of seconds to get over that, now you\’ve got to manage with a sail twitching like a 17 year old in a job interview, the end looms!!

The first go i tried a front loop, no way, failed to even pop the board, spinning round the front landing really quite confused! Second, a budget gybe was all I could manage, now I don\’t consider myself as poor sailor outdoors, I can pretty much manage all conditions, this just add water indoor stuff really sorts the men out from the boys!!

Seeing guys pulling off switch stance flaka\’ry stuff on this is really, really very impressive. Big thanks to Mark and the boys at spot on water getting us on and also to the pros for some worthy tips, humbling yet unmissable! hmm maybe i\’ll check out the guiness tent to calm down!!

If you a planning a trip to the show today then be sure to check out the Spot on Water stand (E7006)!!  When its not happening in the pool, its happening on their stand!!  They have live music starting at 1pm today with DJ 1210……Check it out!!!!
