Light winds greeted participants in DAY ONE of the Highland Spring HIHO 2007 event.
The fleet made an early departure from The Moorings base in Road Town for the 17-mile upwind trek to Virgin Gorda’s North Sound but racing was postponed pending breeze. The fleet relocated to Eustatia island for a sumptuous lunch. Race director Rusty Henderson opted for a fun race which, in the 5-7 knot breeze, saw the Kona longboards run away with the three top spots. It was St Barth windsurfing guru Jean-Michel Marot in 1st followed by Steve Gottlieb from Florida, USA. Another Kona racer, Michael Alderman from Pennsylvania, USA nabbed 3rd. The first Techno racer was hardcore Al Simmonds. Ten year old Josh Morrell of Tortola sailed an O’Pen BIC dinghy to 6th overall.
Tonight’s party is at the famous Bitter End Yacht Club where DJ Heavy B will spin the disks. Heavy B is noted for his skill at getting anyone to dance.
