Australia has a fantastic windsurfing scene, whilst you might immediately think of WA many of the other states have thriving competitions too. Boardseeker catches up with the organisers of the NSW wavesailing tour to find out more about their upcoming events…
This year the NSW Wavesailing series will be changing its format dramatically, aiming to increase the participation at each event and help all participants improve their skills.
The new format will be less daunting for new members and will be more appealing to current ones. Simply intended for the enjoyment of wavesailing in general, the new format will focus on getting everyone maximum time on the water. Beginners and youths will be able to sail all day with the top sailors in the state, watching and learning, getting help and encouragement, whilst the top level sailors will have the ability to ‘out do’ each other with radical innovative moves.
The new format is an all-day expression session. Followed by a short ‘super session’ late in the afternoon where a top number of sailors, chosen by officials, sail for the final positions. The weekends will be ideal for the whole family with organised events at night as well as preferred accommodation locations so all competitors can be in the same spot over the weekend. Prizes will be random and spot prizes will be awarded for things like biggest wipeout, best jump, biggest improver.
The beauty of the new format is that there will be a separate highly competitive event that will determine the actual NSW state champion. With a 4 day long waiting period and man on man format following the PWA guidelines, this event will be a great spectacle and fingers crossed for some great conditions. All members are welcome to compete, if competition is not your cup of tea, come along and join in with the social aspects, sail outside the contest area or hang around the tent and watch the ‘big guns’ do their stuff.
I have a feeling that we are due for some serious South swells this year as they have been a bit scarce over the past 3 summers. This year we are sure to score some wind and decent waves and have some memorable weekends. I hope to see you there!
