The Lancelin Ocean Classic has long been thought of as one of the best long distance windsurf races in the World. Taking place in Western Australia in January, windsurfers travel from far and wide to be part of the epic race. This year the likes of Bjorn Dunkerbeck and Philip Koester, will join hundreds more to race on the water of WA, plus the best wavesailors around will battle it out for the wave title, too:
This weekend sees the best Wind and Kitesurfers from around the globe competing in the 29th consecutive Lancelin Ocean Classic.
Around 5000 visitors are expected to turn the coastal town into a thriving four-‐day beach festival centred around WA’s world famous South Westerly sea breeze.
41 times world champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck will go toe to toe with local hero and 6 times event winner Steve Allen in the 25 km Windsurfing marathon on Saturday.
Dunkerbeck is a world speed-‐sailing record breaker while Allen will be desperate to defend his crown.
“It’s always a world class event in Lancelin, the community gets right behind it and that really shows when you get the best professionals flying in from around the world year in year out.” Allen said.
Along with the traditional 25km Windsurfing marathon, this year’s event will feature some exhilarating wave competitions.
Wave sailing is the visually spectacular discipline with over 70 competitors sailing in four man heats trying to out manoeuvre each other with huge aerials or radical wave riding.
Sheer demand sees this year’s schedule include two windsurfing events (Wave sailing and the Marathon) plus the addition of spectacular new events.
Due to rising popularity, a Kite surfing component has been added to capture the attention of this rapidly growing sport with three events (a downwind marathon, a wave event and a very exciting expression session/big air competition) sure to entertain the bumper crowds.
Hundreds have already registered for the marathon: a gruelling downwind 25km course where athletes battle for a share of the $25,000 prize pool.

History of the event
The world renowned Lancelin Ocean Classic started in 1986 with a few enthusiastic windsurfers and a handful of competitors who recognised that the WA coastline offered some of the most spectacular wind and water conditions anywhere in the world. They came together for a one-‐day event, the Ledge to Lancelin Ocean Marathon and from these humble beginnings it is now one of the most popular events on the worldwide wind surfing calendar.
The aim of the windsurfing regatta is to bring tourists into Lancelin and the surrounding towns as well as catering for the windsurfers that currently frequent Lancelin on a regular basis. The windsurfers come from all parts of Australasia, South East Asia, the Americas and Europe on a regular basis as Lancelin has the reputation of being one of the world’s best windsurfing destinations and is a must visit destination for any windsurfer.
