The Australian National Wave Sailing Championships

Online Editor

The Australian National Wavesailing Championship is due to take place from the 16th to the 23rd of February within the Illawarra region of New South Wales.  The Australian Nationals is an annual event that moves from State to State and is open to local and international sailors.  The last event (see all pictures in the gallery at the bottom of the page) within the Illawarra was won by Jaeger Stone who just beat Ben Severne, the man behind international brand, and 2013 Nationals sponsor Severne Sails.

Event Director, Warren Holder who is based in Gerroa (one of the contest locations) is one of Australia’s best-known wave sailors having won his first trophy in 1988.  Warren has been a driving force behind competitive wave sailing in Australia and would love to see some of the world’s best compete at his home break or Windang 30 minutes north.

Locations – why you should attend:

Gerroa

gerroa

Gerroa is perfectly positioned and orientated to maximise the North Easterly wind flow which is the predominate wind through summer.  Thanks to the local topography, the wind in Gerroa is usually 10 knots stronger than anywhere else on the East Coast of Australia.  Facing South, the wind comes off the beach at the perfect angle to groom the waves and get maximum speed and power for the best down the line conditions you’ll find.

Windang

If the North Easterly wind is not blowing, it is usually replaced by a Southerly which also kicks up some great swell.  When a Southerly blows, the event will move 30 minutes north to Windang which on its day can be one of the best starboard tack sailing spots in the world.  A rock wall produces perfect pealing waves for endless bottom turns and great jumping on the way back out.

Competitors will be divided into the following divisions:

Open Pro
Ladies
Amateurs
Masters (over 35 yrs)
Grand Masters (over 45 yrs)
Legends (over 55 yrs)
Youth (under 21 yrs)
Juniors (under 17 yrs)
Groms (under 15 yrs)

We have been lucky to have had over 10 days sailing in the last three weeks, so it looks like we should get some great contestable wind and waves in February.

Warren Holder and the rest of the organising committee look forward to welcoming you all to Gerroa in a little over  four weeks.  If you are travelling through the country, but don’t have any equipment get in touch with us through our website and we’ll link you to our local shop who will be able to help with rental.
