Five days of consistent wind meant a lot of heats with potential for sailors to claw back from bad results or crash out from the top spots. Round 1 was all about defending champion Marcilio Browne sailing well, beating Ricardo Campello in the single elimination final and Gollito in the double elimination final – surely this was his event.
Onto Round 2 in the slightly lighter winds and Marcilio crashed out to Andre Paskowski early on in the single, needing to win eight consecutive heats in the double elimination to retain his lead. But one heat into his‘comeback’ and Marcilio Browne came up against Taty Frans – not easy – and Browne went down!
Ricardo (lying second after Round 1) also did no better, beaten by another German, Normen Gunzlein in the single of Round 2 leaving his overall second place in jeopardy. While Marcilio and Ricardo were working out what went wrong, Kiri Thode and Gollito were quieting destroying the rest of the fleet to meet in the final of Round 2 in both the single and the double with Gollito coming out on top.
So into the third round and no one got near Gollito and Kiri – they were a league apart. Ricardo gave a darn good try as did Taty Frans and had the wind blown on the very last day of the event, maybe Marcilio would have had another try through the double elimination but instead the last day was a celebration for the Caribbean sailors who took full glory under the Canarian sun.
