Robby Swift has returned to the world of slalom. Yes, at only 23 yrs old, Robby has already had a career in the racing world!!  In his teenage years, he was Youth World Champion in Racing and Slalom. Then he dabbled in waves & freestyle and got rather good at that!

Now he is back on the slalom course and as a 5ft9, 80kg guy, we asked him how he expects to compete against the ‘big boys’ of over 100kgs in the intense world of slalom racing?

Let’s ask him:

1. You used to do slalom racing in your teenage years. Firstly, why did you stop?

2. So what has influenced your return to slalom?

ROBBY: "It’s about the hard work you put in: training starts, gibing practice, tuning your gear properly"

3. And is this why you aren’t doing the freestyle tour?

4. Does the bigger slalom kit mean you have to be even heavier than before or has modern kit somehow helped the lighter/shorter sailor?

"Trying to put on weight is quite good fun!"

5. List your slalom equipment.

6. Slalom seems to be dominated by the same names year in, year out (Albeau, Pritchard, Buzianis). Why do you think this is?

7. Considering the guys that dominate are well over 6ft and getting on for over 100kilos, do you think someone of a smaller size can realistically compete with them for a slalom world title?

"I still don’t know how Antoine Albeau held down that 7.8m at the Lanzarote contest!"

8. How much slalom training did you do over the winter based in Maui considering you are also a wave sailor?

9. Following on from this, how has your fitness regime changed to help your slalom sailing?

10. What is more physical: a day of slalom competition or a day of wave competition?

"My No.1 top tip for going fast is to really tune your equipment"

13. What’s your No.1 top tip for going fast on slalom kit?

"You can use bigger sails in a lot more wind these days."

14. Is it always fastest to use the biggest sail you can handle?

15. With these bigger sails & lighter winds, is the skill of gybing less important than when slalom racing was pre-dominantly done on much smaller kit?

16. Last year, the Frans brothers’ and Diony Guadagnino had a go at slalom, this year we see Ricardo Campello in Lanzarote as well as yourself. Is this because the other Tours (wave & freestyle) don’t keep you busy enough or do you all think the OVERALL title is on its way back?
