Bjorn: The man who lost his Pryde
Intro: We all know the plot: Dunky leaves Neil Pryde after 15 years and 13 World Titles and heads for arch rival, North Sails. But what is really behind the move?
| |
More money?: Apparently not.
| |
“Bjorn did not join North Sails due to financial reasons, but because of a concept and the confidence in the people working with him on this concept” |
- Boris Zwetkoff, Boards and More. Ok, but surely he wouldn’t have taken a pay cut? |
| |
A falling out with Neil Pryde?: This is vehemently denied by Mr.Neil Pryde himself who simple says,
| |
“Times change and we all need to move on. Whilst we were unable to reach a mutually acceptable contractual agreement with Bjorn for the coming years, this does not lessen our appreciation for the contribution Bjorn has made to our company and to the sport.” |
So what couldn’t they agree on? We think it has less to do with money and more to do with Bjorn’s obsession with the Speed record. He wanted time and effort to go into record breaking kit while Neil Pryde wanted to work more on kit that could be sold to their customers, like freeride and wave sails. But speed is making a comeback and of course it’s the Boards and More brands (F2, Fanatic, North...) that are leading it. |

Jimmy Diaz?: No, not in that sort of way, although the rugged Spaniard is quite cute!
Jimmy left Neil Pryde a few months ago as it's Head Tester, and we speculate that Bjorn moving to North was well on the cards by then. Bjorn and Jimmy are good mates and they both want to work together and, more importantly, live on Gran Canaria, the home of their women (Daida Moreno & Mrs.Dunkerbeck). As Raoul Joa specifically says in his interview below, “It all became feasible when Jimmy came back (home) to North Sails”. The question is, did the North Test Centre in GC come before the Bjorn deal or was it part of the deal to get Bjorn to move? |

The current North testers?: Does Bjorn have a burning desire to work with Buzianis and Baker or does he know that he and Jimmy will be doing most of the work? Surely Micah Buzianis (the longest employee of North) will be a bit nervous, based out in Maui with his close rival Bjorn working on the race and freeride sails in the Canaries?
Not so say Raoul Joa:
| |
“This was a “fear” Bjorn and I had during the negotiations and so we got Micah’s opinion on this prior to signing the contract with Bjorn. Actually Micah was as stoked as the rest of the team to work with one of the most outstanding Windsurfer ever. Our test team and Kai Hopf will still spend 2-3 months a year on Maui and Micah “spends” the summer in Europe racing anyway. Since we get every single prototype sail made in our factory in Sri Lanka, these can be sent anywhere in the world, whether it’s Micah doorstep in Maui or Bjorn’s doorstep in GC” |
What about Nik Baker, North’s golden boy, will he have to spend even more time away from his beautiful wife on the wind battered Canarian Island whist Bjorn gets to go home each night to his, yes, very beautiful wife. (How do these guys do it?!)
Over to Raoul again,
| |
“Nik has been giving feedback to North for the last 7 years and testing sails for 14. He is a very valuable asset to North and will continue to work mainly on Wave, Freestyle and Super-X sails. Anyway, GC is surely easier for him to get to than Maui?” |
Ok, we agree with all that but surely the pot of team rider money has now diminished with Bjorn on board.
| |
It looks like Bjorn’s move is a combination of the above factors, but where does this leave Neil Pryde?
Well we don’t think for a minute that customers will leave the brand just because Bjorn has. Bjorn still won those 13 World Titles on Pryde and that has left a lasting impression on all of us.
Antoine Albeau must be sitting pretty, as Pryde’s top racer, wave rider and super x star. We would imagine Pryde will channel their energies into the younger riders like Robby Swift, Ricardo Campello and Kevin Mevissen having now lost Bjorn and of course Josh Stone (to Goya). There must be more money in the pot and it will be interesting to see where they spend it. |
