When this event was announced in Pozo during the PWA contest, the South American boys said that unless Kauli had a total nightmare, he would walk this event. His good friend, Marcilio Browne went as far as to say he was unbeatable at his home break in Ibiraquera , Brazil . Well, they weren’t wrong, but what they couldn’t have predicted was who Kauli would meet in the finals. In fact the same goes for the top 8 where the down-the-line, port tack conditions brought some different names into the fold.

Kauli Seadi Result: Winner! Kauli was a class act! He continued to ride the waves with his own style, working into the deepest pockets and never really coming off the wave – surfer style. The single elimination was run in gusty, offshore winds and head high waves and he revelled in it. By the time the double elimination was run, the wind had picked up and gone more cross shore with logo high sets. But, of course, Kauli was stranded on the beach waiting to see who would meet him in the final. Nik Baker was fresh as a daisy and took out Victor Fernandez and then Levi to face Kauli in a 30 minute final. Kauli gave Nik a lesson in new school wave riding and the judges agreed 5-0. Kauli now leads the Wave Tour with two events to go.

Nik Baker Result: 2nd He continues to pull it out the bag this boy! But you’ve got to remember that the single elimination was two waves only, no jumps to count and when it comes to port tack riding, he’s the man. Whilst all the Spanish & South American have been practising their pushloop table tops at onshore beaches, they forgot that this is the PWA Wave Tour, not the PWA Jumping Tour. Baker out shone riders 10 years younger than him with clever wave selection, awesome cutbacks and long, smooth rides. Oh, and all his boards came with two fins, not one. Now there’s a surprise!

Levi Siver Result: 3rd Levi’s a starboard tack man right?! Not at this event. Levi is just so stylish on the wave, whatever the wind direction and he was ripping taking down Josh Angulo and Kevin Pritchard in the final stages of the single elimination before meeting Kauli in the final. Now it was close, lets be fair, but Kauli’s last wave complete with a goita clinched it. In the double, he sat it out like Kauli, and then had to face Nik Baker. It was close, but no cigar, so Levi settled for bronze.

Victor Fernandez Result: 4th The pressure was most definitely on this Spaniard. His main rival for the 2007 PWA Wave Title, Kauli Seadi, had decided to help organise a wave event at his local beach. Victor could only hope that his superior jumping made up for his lack of local knowledge about Ibiraquera. So when it was waves only to count on the first day, we think he snapped! He lost to Robby Swift in the quarter finals of the single and yes, Robby was sailing super good, but this was a disaster for Victor. So come the double, he did the mother of comebacks beating in this order: Scott McKercher, Ricardo Campello, Josh Angulo, Klass Voget, Robby Swift and Kevin Pritchard. Phew…the boy was knackered. What he didn’t need was a fresh, confident Nik Baker. Game over but a very well deserved 4th.

Sailors Worth a Mention

Robby Swift (6th): A good event for Swift following nearly two years of injury hell. He may live in Maui more than he lives in Kent, but ye ole UK port tack training from many events in Ireland and the UK, was enough for him to beat his team mate and dare we say idol, Jason Polakow.

Klass Voget (7th): Klass loves Cape Town ! He has been going there for donkey’s years and on commenting about the conditions at Ibiraquera, he said it was like a soft version of Melkbos which is a very popular sailing beach north of the city. Looks like those years playing off the Cape finally made a difference. Klass is now 12 th in the overall rankings with two events to go.

Camille Juban (17th): The impressive seventeen year old from Guadeloupe started off by beating Timo Mullen to then come against Kauli. But in the double he beat fellow seventeen year old Marcilio Browne leading to a joint 17 th final result. Gun Sails & Quatro have got a real future star – watch this space!

Should have done better

Marcilio Browne (25th): Actually this is a bit unfair as this young man has so much hype around him. Although he is part of the Seadi pack, he doesn’t actually sail at Ibiraquera. Inside sources tell us that in Pozo, when this event was announced, he conceded that port tack down-the-line was his least favourite conditions and he wouldn’t be surprised if he did rubbish. But losing to Camille Juban, the even younger upstart from Guadeloupe must have hurt.

Scott McKercher (17th): Come on Scott, you’re a port tack legend. Sort it out!

Jason Polakow (7th): Seventh isn’t bad but we always expect great things from this man and seventh just ain’t great enough!
