Last year one of them was overall champion but why is it that the new breed of wavesailors are still not breaking through? Another wave competition and the old hands give a Masterclass on how to wave ride, how to win heats and yet again stamp their authority on anyone trying to stop their reign. This year the charge was led by Kevin Pritchard in FIRST, Josh Angulo in SECOND and Nik Baker in FOURTH. The only sub-30 year old to make the final was Kauli Seadi in THIRD.
This is how they did it.

COMMENTARY: His brother Matt Pritchard may have won this event last year, but between these two siblings there is obviously a healthy competition. Both amazing windsurfers, both excellent all rounders. Here Kevin opens his account with a massive stalled forward, landing heavily between the jaws of a breaking set. Simple, high and effective. He cruised past Noguiera and Yannick Anton to meet his brother Matt in the quarter finals. |

COMMENTARY: Matt Pritchard may be a family man now, but that doesn’t stop him sailing like a sugar rushed kid on the water. The pictures you may see of Guincho waves are deceptive, they are gnarly and bowl over just when you don’t expect them too. The wind is onshore at the start of the day and to get more than one turn requires exceptional skill. Here Matt Pritchard, carves the face up for all its worth and then with impeccable timing hits a backside aerial over the bowling face. He takes out Jamie Hancock and Klaus Voget. |

COMMENTARY: Now here is a real threat to the established scent. Brawzino is only 16, trains with Kauli and Guincho has shown that he takes no prisoners and is not afraid of causing a few upsets. One of the few kids really coming through the ranks on the wave scene. Here he cranks right into the pit for a backside aerial as the wave closes out beneath him. Nice - and a sign of more to come. |

COMMENTARY: 2003 World Champion and super fierce competitor shows no signs of retiring with his amazing performance and second place here at Guincho. Watch this tricky pushloop as he looks to over-rotate but then stops to land perfectly and score in the high eights! |

THE MOVE: Waveride
THE SAILOR:
Kauli Seadi

COMMENTARY: This is the first of Kauli Seadi’s waverides in his veritable style. He really learnt how to contest sail last year and instead of just trying to smack a lip, he milks a wave for all its worth. |

COMMENTARY: Boujamaa had some specatcular moments in Guincho. After a close decision he got past John Hibbard but then gave Kauli a real run for his money with some seriously tweaked moves. If he could just land them in a competition he would be in the money! They say he is inventive, and here he tries to crack an onshore Goita – an amazingly hard move - but look at the whole wave he wastes trying to do so! |

COMMENTARY: We are surprised that Victor Fernandez Lopez did not advance further. His jumping skills are at another level. Here he demonstrates how to waveride in Guincho; watch how he snaps off the top when taking the crumbling onshore wave. Sometimes things just don’t go your way, as they rarely probably do when you face the might of Josh Angulo in the quarter finals. |

COMMENTARY: Not one to settle for the usual moves, here Kauli takes a backloop one step further. Kauli has a great ability to control clew first moves. This time he does a backloop clew first – not new you might think, but when have you seen one go this high. This was in his round against Boujamaa Guilloul. |

COMMENTARY: Now this is real class. The wave rocks up, Brawzino sets up for a bit of riding then throws a perfect flaka at the top of the wave, accelerating him down the face into a slashy waveride - genius. |

COMMENTARY: More of the Gunicho Master. This time Kevin picks off a great set, the only thing is that as he starts to go left the wave peels right! Guincho does that to you, so one step ahead of the game, Kevin ducks his sail and surfs the wave clew first, serving up a dish of the finest spray to the acquired taste of the judges. |

COMMENTARY: The European Formula Champion takes on a solid logo high section and just smacks it as if it was Hookipa. Not bad for a racer. Ross may just show what he is made of in the waves this year. He finished 5th in Guincho, knocking out one of the favourites, Alex Mussolini, in the second round. |

COMMENTARY: Nik was styling it in Guincho, showing no signs of backing down and letting the, erm, more youthful guys ahead. Here Baker gets one of the few genuine frontside aerials of the contest and manages to put a little tweak in. Baker ended up 4th overall. Looking good for a podium place again this year. |

COMMENTARY: A massive backloop from the champion to boost him into first place. This move propelled him above the competition and helped to seal his victory in the dying light. Also check out his board, not the usual shape Kevin normally rides. |

COMMENTARY: Just what is it that makes this girl so goddam good. Most sane people would back off a dodgy ramp like this, but not Daida. She just smacks it and holds on for a big stalled end over end forward loop. Moves like that are going to be hard to beat….ever! |
