2006 London Boatshow: The Moves that Mattered

The action was far better than last year. The pool and fans were the same so we can only imagine the sailors have just developed more balls!! Enjoy!

THE MOVE: Double
THE SAILORS: Yannick Anton
RESULT: This jump was done just after the contest finished!!

COMMENTARY: Ok, so this wasn’t in the actual competition, but it was the jump of the event. The top 3 sailors were given one more go at the ramp to simply please the crowd before we all made are way home. However, Timo Mullen was on the mic and he only wanted to see one thing. Talk about pressure!

THE MOVE: Fruit loop
THE SAILORS: Kauli Seadi
RESULT: 5th in Jumps

VIDEO: Windows [463K] Quicktime [448K]

COMMENTARY: To Lenny Kravitz’s,“Are you gonna go my Way”, Kauli performed the cleanest ever indoor fruit loop. It scored a perfect 30 but it was just too late to make an impact on his overall position. However, it must be noted that Kauli had a nasty ankle injury that he got during pre-event practise and on some jumps you could see him wince on landing.

THE MOVE: Back loop
THE SAILORS: Alex Mussolini
RESULT: 2nd in Jumps

VIDEO: Windows [432K] Quicktime [376K]

COMMENTARY: Alex simply can’t backloop without arching his back! But it looks dam cool and he was only one of a handful of sailors to land backies cleanly.

THE MOVE: Double forward
THE SAILORS: Ricardo Campello
RESULT: Jump winner

VIDEO: Windows [648K] Quicktime [643K]

COMMENTARY: This was the first ever indoor double loop and again it was done under immense pressure from Timo Mullen on the mic. The trick is to do a real sideways spin loop and go into the rotation as soon as you leave the ramp to give yourself room to get two in (apparently).

THE MOVE: Table top
THE SAILORS: Alex Mussolini
RESULT: 2nd in Jumps

VIDEO: Windows [509K] Quicktime [476K]

COMMENTARY: This was the highest scoring table top of the event. All the sailors threw in table tops but to be honest some were venturing towards donkey kicks. We know it’s hard in there but the crowds want the loops!!

THE MOVE: One-footed forward
THE SAILORS: Yannick Anton
RESULT: 3rd in Jumps

VIDEO: Windows [442K] Quicktime [420K]

COMMENTARY: This is a massive jump! Probably the highest jump of the Show and it was done in the Sunday night final. Yannick is a 24 year old future French Windsurfing Superstar. His outdoor doubles kids from Marseille

THE MOVE: Table top forward
THE SAILORS: Alex Mussolini
RESULT: 2nd in Jumps

VIDEO: Windows [453k] Quicktime [418k]

COMMENTARY: Ok, so it wasn’t the most tweaked table top pre-forward loop but look how slick it was landed. Did anyone else land a table top forward so upright? Nope.

THE MOVE: Forward and Push Loop
THE SAILORS: Ricardo Campello
RESULT: Jump winner

VIDEO: Windows [519K] Quicktime [484K]
VIDEO: Windows [571K] Quicktime [540K]

COMMENTARY: To do a push loop you need loads of speed and a good vertical take off. Two things that can be lacking as you approach the ramp in that horrible, gusty wind. Consequently, not many sailors try them, let alone land them. Angulo had a couple, as did Mussolini, but this one was the cleanest.

THE MOVE: Forward
THE SAILORS: Thomas Traversa
RESULT: 7th in Jumps

VIDEO: Windows [602K] Quicktime [564K]

COMMENTARY: We picked this one out because it was one of the highest forwards of the competition. Young Thomas turned 20 just before Christmas and is another kid from France set for the podium. He consistently went for big jumps with lots of variation but just wasn’t as consistent as the top 5. He will be a name to watch.

The Slalom

THE MOVE: Sunday night Slalom Finals
THE SAILORS: Nik Baker .v. Ricardo Campello
RESULT: Baker wins!

VIDEO: Windows [1.82MB] Quicktime [1.89MB]
VIDEO: Windows [2.07MB] Quicktime [2.13MB]

COMMENTARY: This was the Sunday night Slalom final; best out of 3. These two clips show how much Baker dominates indoor slalom. He didn’t drop a gybe for the whole event. Ricardo provided the best challenge but even when Baker left the ramp in second, he still managed to out-fox the young contender and take the overall crown.

Ladies

THE MOVE: Forward
THE SAILORS: Daida Moreno
RESULT: Jump winner

VIDEO: Windows [314K] Quicktime [243K]

COMMENTARY: There were only 4 women invited to the event: the Moreno’s, Nayra Alonso & Junko Nagoshi. It was expected that Daida would walk it but that wasn’t quite true. Junko put up a fight in the first night of Jumps with decent forwards but was not so hot at Slalom which dragged down her overall score. Iballa had some shocking wipeouts and came last in the jump which isn’t like her. However she made up for it in the Slalom & freestyle. Nayra got some forwards off the ramp & was consistent enough in the other two disciplines to finish in third. But it was Daida who had the best jumps, the best freestyle tricks and slalom heats. She still rules!
