PWA Wave Champion Jason Polakow

The first we heard of Regis was on the beach in Pozo during the PWA event. ‘Who is that guy getting monster air?!’ Rumour has it he was a local school teacher.

Well the rumours were nearly right (Regis is from France) and this guy has spent his whole life working out how to earn money AND get darn good at the sport he loves. He is now a regular on the PWA Tour (finished joint 17th in Pozo this year) but still holds down a job. How does he do it?     Photos courtesy of PWA/Carter.

So what was the Plan of Action when you hit Pozo at 21

At the beginning of my windsurfing career I learnt a lot with from all the Pros in Pozo and did some PWA events. But when I finished my Sports degree I didn’t want to throw it away for windsurfing because I knew how hard it was to make money from the sport unless you were always in the top10. I wanted to have something more for my future.

The Next Stage…

So I became a school teacher in the Canary Islands. After that I did a Masters in Tourism and I moved to Switzerland to start a job in a hotel and make something of my life! But now I am in a strange position; I windsurf and then go back to work. I would like to be a pro windsurfer 100% of the time and have time to train. I spend two months working in the hotel in Switzerland and then go straight into a competition, and it is really hard now. I really have to focus on one thing, maybe windsurfing for 3-5 years and then I will do…something!!

So how does your employer see all of this?!

At the Villa Sassa hotel in Switzerland the ‘big boss’ loves windsurfing and we have a really good relationship. He likes the fact that I am a top level windsurfer and thinks that can bring something to the job. A windsurfer is a little bit different. Also it would be hard for them to find someone to work for one month then have a break. I am very flexible and that suits them.

People would say you are very lucky to be doing what you do.

I don’t think it is a question of luck. We want so much to be in that world, to compete, to train etc. We like it so much we can always find a solution. But if you want to have a family, get a house then you have to say, ‘that will come later’. But right now what I want to do is windsurf. You can work and be a windsurfer, you can be a student and a windsurfer (like Thomas Traversa) but you can’t live like normal people. You can’t have what ‘normal people’ have!
