We took a world class surfer, a legendary kiter and a world title winning windsurfer and stuck them together on a windless beach in Morocco and asked them which sport ruled! Handbags at dawn – it’s the debate of the year.

Goya:

THE INTEVIEWS OF SELF JUSTICE

What makes a stylish board rider?

FG: It’s about doing your own thing and having fun.

MS: There is a temptation in windsurfing & kitesurfing to focus too much on technical tricks which just don’t look good.

DS: The essence of good style is making something difficult look easy.

Can you describe the differences between the top turn and the bottom turn across the sports?

MS: To see how good someone is, just watch their first bottom turn.

DS: Good surfing starts with the bottom turn.

FG: The essence of riding waves is to see how close you can get to nature.

What about aerials?

DS: Progression in aerial moves in surfing has been a lot slower as we don’t have the sail to help us get air.

MS:
I like to see someone who gets air born through good timing & technique not through their equipment.

Is commercialisation in boardsports a good thing?

DS: Some people see commercialisation in boardsports as if it’s a bad thing and some elements are troubling but money in the sport drives it forward.

MS: We are the lucky few that get to go in the water every day but it is our job to make it easier and more fun for the guys who can’t go out every day – that’s commercialism.

How is equipment changing?

DS: None of the top surfers were that keen to try different designs as they would have to alter their style of surfing – no good if you need to keep winning contests.

FG: Everything keeps getting smaller and more efficient.

MS: In terms of technology, it is the most open sport. Literally overnight, the market place of product can change.

What is the future of hydrofoils?

FG: It’s definitely coming!

DS: It’s another sport with just so much potential.

MS: They are some significant problems with getting in the water with a kite and a foil board – it can be quite a dangerous thing.

What is it like travelling with kit?

DS: Shinny would like to tell us that he can fit all his gear in a back pack!

MS: I’m not sure that’s the way to choose your sport – based on excess baggage rates!

FG: Kiting is the best for excess baggage.

Which sport is the most fashionable?

DS: I would like to know why kitesurfers wear their shorts over their wetsuits?!

FG: There is a skate culture being brought into watersports and they are bringing in this fashion.

MS: Blame the wake boarders for the shorts over the wetsuits thing.

Closing statements please gentlemen…

DS: Surfing is great because I don’t have to wear my surf trunks over my wetsuit.

MS: Surfing is great as it keeps all the monkeys out of the kite line up.

FG: Everything that comes around, will come around again – you see!
