VIDEO: ZUSHI Freestyle PRO/AM

Recently the Zushi PRO/AM freestyle contest came to its conclusion in Japan. They scored perfect wind with gusts up to 33 knots and there was certainly a lot of action throughout the day. Check out the incredibly high quality video below, featuring many of the big names in Japan right now as well as a lot of new faces. In the end the winner was Yuma Kobayashi (J-100) who, by the looks of it, was sailing on a pretty high level. We hope to see some of these guys on the PWA Tour this year…

2013 Bonaire ProKids – 31st May

The dates are set for the 2013 ProKids event in Bonaire, check out the press release below and the cool video preview.

From May 31st to June 2nd, visit the beautiful island of Bonaire for the upcoming 9th edition of the ProKids event. The crystal blue waters of Sorobon lagoon await, where the best of the best youngsters in freestyle and slalom will pave their way to future windsurfing domination from the Caribbean. Countless riders like Sarah-Quita Offringa, Kiri Thode, Taty Frans and many others have risen through the ProKids ranks, right on to the world stage of the PWA World Tour. You could be next!

This year, the 2013 ProKids Bonaire schedule is as follows:

• Friday, May 31th
10:00 AM: Registration at event site
19:00 PM: Opening Ceremony

• Saturday, June 1st
10:00 AM: Start of the Slalom & Freestyle Competitions

• Sunday, June 2nd
10:00 AM: Finals of the Slalom & Freestyle
18:00 PM: Awards Ceremony

Last year, the 8th ProKids Bonaire Freestyle & Slalom Championship was a success with many competitors from the Caribbean representing the islands of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire. The Netherlands and the USA were also represented in numbers. Kiri Thode ended up taking 1st place in the Men’s Freestyle, followed closely by Taty and Choko Frans. In the U-17 Freestyle category, Amado Vrieswijk came away with the victory while Jürgen Saragoza won it in the U-15.

As for slalom, Ethan Westera ranked 1st with Amado Vrieswijk arriving in 3rd place. Taty Frans, who had not participated in the first heats managed to grab a couple of 1st places but it wasn’t enough to catch up with the other guys.

With last year’s 60+ participants, ProKids Bonaire 2013 promises to be even bigger with more attention for what’s happening on land as well. Expect great accommodations, celebrations and a windsurfing spectacle in true Caribbean fashion!

VIDEO: Lachauer in Sardinia

Andi Lachauer joined a few friends for a trip around Sardinia the last few weeks. A good spot at this time of the year, the island of Sardinia can offer some pretty strong conditions, the likes of Adrian Beholz and Dieter Van Der Eyken were also training there around the same time. It has been a long winter for many in Europe this year and still the temperatures remain on the low side. It is times like these that any pro-windsurfer does their very best to escape to warmer climes in an effort to keep up training ready for the World Tour stops. The French cohort Nicolas Akgazciyan, Julien Mas and Adrian Bossen made the trip to Aruba to windsurf in board shorts and train completely free of distractions, here is Nicos tale.

Amado Vrieswijk continued his reign in the Aruba Extreme Games taking the top spot in not just the second single elimination but also holding onto it in the second double elimination proving that he means business this year.

Day 3 and 4 Official Report

Rafael de Windt pulled out a huge stalled forward loop wowing the crowds with his great performance. In the small final Rafael won from Steven with more style and power full moves.

Another great Final battle took place between Youp and Amado. Amado once again took victory in the windsurfing eliminations.

VIDEO: Swiss Storm Cheese with Balz Muller

No that is not a typo. Balz Muller sent this into us, his version of the Red Bull Storm Chase, just in Switzerland. Lake Urnersee can get winds that exceed 80mph in the gusts, so to try moves in these conditions is just insane, well Balz is known for his gnarly approach to windsurfing which is perhaps taken from his love of snow sports. Enjoy the action and check out the attempt at ‘freestyle’ in storm force winds towards the end.

The young Jeremy Pluss turned a lot of heads at EFPT tour stop in France this year. With his best ranking of the whole year in Sigri, Greece, Pluss finished in 7th place and in the end his overall position was 9th in 2012. There is no hiding the fact that Andy ‘Bubble’ Chambers remains to be one of the best UK freestylers of our time. Rarely defeated but hotly contested his style and power continue to go on. Enough praise, watch on as you get to witness the combination of K4 fins, Bubble and Blacklab films.

Bubble – “Over the last 6 months we have been trying out some new shapes for the Bubble Freestyle fin. We are considering having two options depending on if you are really going for full power competitive freestyle more on flat water or just happy with sailing in all conditions but still being able to learn all the moves. So far testing has been going really well and we hope to release some more info about it soon. On the racing side of things we have a new edition in the likes of Ben van der Steen who will join Ross Williams and Cedric Bordes to race and develop the Vapor range of sails. New to the team is Sebastian Kordel and he will be learning the program ready to input his impressions. These guys are all good friends and will team up with designer Peter Munzlinger to set a new standard on the racecourse! Valerie Arrighetti and Sarah-Quita Offringa will show the women’s side of the fleet how to get it done! Keep an eye out for the Vapors up top of the podium.
The formula class sees Ross Williams the 2012 World Title holder back on a mission to defend what he worked so hard for. The Vapor racing board has been on top of the podium since its inception and will be hard to beat. As the formula sails continue to evolve, there is nothing to stop further domination in the formula world.

The Wave Warriors are a strong force to be reckoned with. Thomas Traversa who just advanced into the Red Bull Storm Chase 2nd stage looks to back up his victory in Denmark and continue pushing the sport to new levels. His friend and team mate Alex Mussolini who ranked 3rd place on the PWA Tour has his sights set on the number 1 slot for this year! Jamie Hancock and Phil Horrocks continue to raise the bar in the UK while showing the PWA guys they have talent that can be deadly. When it comes to the Canary Islands, local boy Dario Ojeda is capable of taking down anyone. Watch these guys as the PWA WAVE TOUR looks to be a good one for 2013.

Our dominant freestyle team continues with Tonky Frans, Kiri Thode, Antony Ruenes, Davy Scheffers and of course the women’s Freestyle World Champion Sarah Quita Offringa. Utilizing the revolutionary PURE freestyle sails the team continues its quest to be the best!

Slovenian freestyle windsurfer Andraz Zan recently caught up 2011 PWA Freestyle World Champion Steven Van Broeckhoven for a trip to Brazil. To stray away from the norm the duo visited Sao Miguel de Gostoso to sail spots in and around this area that is formerly better known for its waves. Well in this clip we can see it is most certainly more versatile than that as Steven rips through outrageous moves with a height that most can only dream of. When combined with Andraz’s incredible eye for detail we are left with a clip full of calibre, style and reality.

Andraz quotes that “A lot of sailing 3 trips around Sao Miguel de Gostso, nice people, cool atmosphere… It should always be like that… fun sailing and not thinking about compeition, etc… It comes so much more out of it… Most people who don’t compete know this but the riders, start to forget… You have to experience everything from the trip and just have fun sailing with your friends! Our favourite windsurfing rap artist Mattia Pedrani has signed to Gaastra. An opportunity to create a video he has produced this clip that goes beyond the usual realms of most freestyle windsurfers, but don’t hear it from us, over to Pedrani -

This video is different from my previous clips. The action isn’t as fast and it focuses more on the beautiful scenery covered by 15cm of powder. The track is also smoother and communicates the surreal atmosphere I could feel when walkin around the streets and the beach covered in snow, ready to hit the water. As the title suggests, the need to go windsurfing goes beyond petty things like below zero temperatures and whether it’s actually snowing or not. It’s way too easy to be doin tricks in shorts somewhere where the water’s pancake flat.
The struggle represents the ultimate test for your passion and dedication and once you overcome it, it just makes you appreciate everything more.
As you can probably understand from me autoclosing my wetsuit, I was completely by myself and I also had to leave the Ghettocam recording on the beach by itself and try to pull tricks in front of it.
Icing on the cake, there’s a pretty big surprise in it too!
