2011 PWA freestyle world champion Steven Van Broeckhoven decided to stay in Gruissan for a couple of extra days after the DEFI Wind event. With a solid forecast and conditions that any freestyler would lose themselves with excitement over, Steven shows exactly why he is one of the best in the world, particularly at about 1.00min of the video where he performs the first ever witnessed air-kabi (air kabikuchi) off literally dead flat water, just insane the level of freestyle windsurfing these days. Check out the ‘king of pop’ below…

If you’re already comfortable with the basic freestyle moves and looking to learn the top moves like the pros, there’s a number of moves you can look at learning next. Andy ‘Bubble’ Chambers joins Boardseeker to talk you through the Shaka.

The Shaka

The Shaka is a combination of a Shove-it and a Flaka – it is not one of the newest moves but is still one of the nicest to watch but also one of the most difficult to learn. It was invented by Ricardo Campello back in 2002, it was and still is used in the freestyle arena today. However, as with a lot of the freestyle moves the Shaka has made it in to the wave sailing arena in the form of a backside 360.

The most important requirement for a good Shaka, especially without a piece of chop or small wave is a lot of speed.

Then to start the rotation, carve hard and fast to windward by putting the weight is on your heels. Make sure you sheet in hard with your backhand by pulling the boom in and upwards (this is the Shuv It part).

As you carve up in to wind turn your back hip into the sail and push your back foot down, this will allow you to pop the board (this is where a small wave or piece of chop will help). Your front heel should stay down to keep the board turning in the right direction to windward.

Once in the air you can push downwards on your back arm to backwind the sail to give you some lift and help float you around the rotation. It’s very important that you keep turning your head in the direction of the rotation, also try to think about turning your shoulders and body in this direction as well.

Hold this position in the air as you rotate.

As you come down you should land with the front of the board first providing you held that same position and kept your front arm straight.

This part is much like the end of a Flaka providing you got the fist steps right! The end of rotation will happen naturally and you will just spin round!

Day 4 in Korea saw all fleets take to the water and complete a number of rounds. As it stands Alberto Menegatti continues to hold his form ahead of Antoine Albeau (2nd) and Ben Van Der Steen (3rd). In the womens fleet Karin Jaggi still sits at the top after an impressive performance in all her races. Read on for the official PWA press.

Karin Jaggi in control

Day 4

The decision to hold an earlier skippers’ meeting on day four of the Ulsan PWA World Cup was duly rewarded as Jinha beach was transformed into a port tack slalom sailors playground, which allowed an epic – but grueling – eight hours of racing to be completed. The usual thermal winds – which so often grace South Korea’s number one windsurfing beach – were replaced with a frontal cross shore wind from the left. By the end of the day, two eliminations for both the men and women were completed, whilst the first round of the men’s race four was also sailed. Today’s action saw four separate winners’, firstly the two reigning world champions Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) and Valerie Arrighetti (Tabou / Gaastra / Mystic) both claimed their first race victories of the year, before Arnon Dagan (RRD / NeilPryde) claimed his first elimination victory in four years. Unfortunately for Arrighetti, Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) soon reasserted her authority over the event with another bullet. The conditions today truly showed exactly why South Korea is one of the most challenging stops on the tour… more

Jimmy Diaz

Day 5 was a long day for the crew and competitors as they remained on their toes as the wind built then dropped several times throughout the day. probably worse than a no wind forecast for those at the event as they really have to be ready for action all day long. However with tomorrow promising good wind, the final day of competition could well prove to be fruitful for those lying in the lower positions. Read on for the official PWA press.

The calm on day 5

DAY 5

A day of teasing winds – despite an unfavourable forecast – on the fifth day of the Ulsan PWA World Cup saw the sailors experience a long day on hold, but ultimately the wind never quite materialized enough to allow the competition to resume. However, the glorious sunshine returned allowing the competitors and crowds to relax on the beach. The sailors were eventually released at 4:45pm and they will now prepare themselves to battle it out on the last day of racing tomorrow – which should see an action packed day of fully charged slalom… more

The official PWA event preview has been released, read all about what is in store below as we head into the first stage of the PWA Slalom Tour.

Event Preview: Prepare for adrenaline-fueled slalom as the PWA returns to South Korea

Between the 4th to the 10th May the opening slalom event of the year will see the fastest sailors in the world heading to South Korea’s famed Jinha beach, which is situated just half an hours drive from the bustling metropolitan city of Ulsan.

Jinha beach has quickly earned itself the reputation of being the top windsurfing destination in the country, due to it’s beautiful white sand beaches and reliable trade winds, which blow consistently between May and June. South Korea often proves to be one of the most challenging stops on the tour, which guarantees an enthralling week of warp speed slalom. Expect tempers to flare as the sailors try to take the highs with the lows.

What’s the Deal?

Seven days of fully charged slalom as the fastest sailors in the world go head-to-head in the opening slalom event of the year, as they battle it out for those crucial early season world tour points.

Ones to Watch

Men

After a long winter break it’s going to be interesting to see if anyone can break the old rearguard consisting of the reining world champion Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) and his arch nemesis Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne / Dunkerbeck Eyewear / Chris Benz) who have dominated the slalom scene in recent seasons. Dunkerbeck will be looking to exact revenge against his biggest rival, after Albeau snatched the world title from beneath the terminator’s nose in the final event of 2012.

Micah Buzianis (JP / Maui Sails) enjoyed a fantastic season in 2012 as he returned to the overall podium for the first time since 2007. The American will hold fond memories of South Korea having claimed victory here last year and he’ll be hoping he can replicate the same form again over the coming week. Buzianis has a wealth of experience and is one of the best starters on the tour, so he’ll certainly be in the thick of the action.

Julien Quentel (RRD / NeilPryde) showed his true potential over the duration of last season. Not only did Quentel demonstrate that he is one of the quickest sailors on the tour, but he also showed the level of consistency that is needed to challenge for top honors. The man from Saint Maarten enjoyed his best year to date in 2012 – claiming fourth – and he’ll now be looking to earn himself a place on the coveted podium.

After completing his winter move to Gaastra it’s going to be interesting to see how Ben van der Steen (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic / Different) performs in the first event of the year. The flying Dutchman is without doubt one the quickest and most talented sailors on the tour, and he’ll be looking to combine his straight line speed with fully planing gybes to claim a place in the top three by the end of the week.

Josh Angulo returned to Gun Sails during the close season, after his well publicized split from them in 2011. Angulo has finished in the overall top ten for the previous two years and we see no reason for this to change. Having finished ninth in 2011 and sixth for 2012, the two times PWA wave world champion will be hoping to continue his trend of moving onwards and upwards as he goes in quest of a third world crown.

Other sailors who will all be vying for a place in the top ten come the end of the week include the ever consistent Jimmy Diaz (Starboard / North), who tends to revel in the challenging conditions that the Sea of Japan produces. France’s fiery Frenchman, Cyril Moussilmani (Starboard / Severne / Mystic) made a slow start to the season last year, but if he can show the sort of form he produced at the backend of last year, he’ll certainly be challenging for the top spots. Peter Volwater (Fanatic / Avanti) is one of the most competitive sailors on the tour and he’ll be hoping to replicate the form which saw him finish eight last season. Also the trio of Australia’s Steve Allen (Starboard / Severne), Spain’s Ludovic Jossin (Patrik / Loft Sails) and Itlay’s Alberto Menegatti (Starboard / Point-7) will all be battling it out to force their way into an extremely competitive top ten.

The main name of note missing from the men’s fleet will be Britain’s Ross Williams (Tabou / Gaastra), who finished third here last year whilst claiming seventh place overall. Williams suffered a fractured Talus (ankle bone) at the end of March, and unfortunately South Korea has come a little too soon for Williams to be able to make the inaugural slalom event of 2013.

Finally there will be a whole host of Korean and Asian sailors who have the potential to cause an upset. With their extra inside knowledge about the local conditions, there’s certainly going to be no easy races at this event.

Women

All eyes will be on the reigning world champion, Valerie Arrighetti (Tabou / Gaastra / Mystic), the French star usually excels in the challenging conditions of South Korea, which is further demonstrated by the fact she has won here for the past two seasons. Arrighetti will be determined to complete an illustrious hat-trick of event wins.

Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) came as close as you can to winning the world title as she finished on equal points with Arrighetti in 2012. The Swiss Gem will be looking to exact revenge on her fierce rival. Jaggi is renowned for her outstanding top speed and silky smooth gybes, which make her a serious contender for the not just the title in South Korea, but also for the overall crown.

Lena Erdil (Patrik / Loft Sails / AL360 / Mystic) created windsurfing history last year as she became the first Turkish lady to finish in the top three overall. With an ever improving skill set and the ambition to match, Erdil will be looking to break into the illustrious top two.

Also in contention will be the youthful talent of Delphine Cousin (JP / NeilPryde). The twenty-one year old demonstrated last season her fantastically timed starts time and time again. With a little more composure over the remainder of the course Cousin could easily be challenging for podium honors come the end of the week. Finally Cagla Kubat (Starboard / Loft Sails) and Marion Mortefon (Starboard / Severne) will be hoping that they can break into the top five and above.

Due to her studying commitments the 2011 PWA Slalom world champion, Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins / Chris Benz) will unfortunately be missing from the women’s fleet, which leaves the door wide open for the rest of the women to take full advantage of her absence.

The first instalment of the PWA Slalom World Tour is just days away, so all that’s left for you to do is sit back, relax and enjoy seven days of warp speed slalom. Expect to see tempers flare as the best men and women in the world look to get off to a winning start. The PWA is also proud to announce that you’ll be able to watch the adrenaline fuelled action unfold as it happens via our live stream, which is available on the PWA TV player at www.pwaworldtour.com

Video footage of the third and final round of qualifications has been released and it highlights the winner, Steven Van Broeckhoven. He scored the second highest score of the entire contest so far with probably the cleanest air funnel into burner ever witnessed in tow-in. With that move in the bag he will surely be the one to beat in tonight’s final showdown.

MONDAY 29th

The final qualification for the Chiemsee European Tow-In Championships took place this evening. With the final 10 contenders this qualification was set to be a show of epic proportions. Max Matissek, the local hero in Austria, Steven Van Broeckhoven and the French rider Adrien Bosson were the ones to watch out for. Bosson who has trained tow-in a lot recently with other French riders like Julien Mas and Nico Akgazciyan did not let down as he blasted through a perfect burner 720 on his first run, scoring 48.5 points. Max Matissek who has become quite famous at his home-spot managed to wow the crowds and judges first with a perfect air funnell into funnell then he followed it up with a monstrous and floaty funnell into air funnell into funnell, claiming it hard and making the crowd go wild. Finally Steven blasted in at incredible speed and launched into the most amazing air funnell into burner ever witnessed, the power and speed of the move was almost impossible to follow. As yet there is no video action but check out the full report HERE as well as a few more outstanding photos of the action, for now here are a couple of sneak peeks…

Recently the Zushi PRO/AM freestyle contest came to its conclusion in Japan. They scored perfect wind with gusts up to 33 knots and there was certainly a lot of action throughout the day. Check out the incredibly high quality video below, featuring many of the big names in Japan right now as well as a lot of new faces. In the end the winner was Yuma Kobayashi (J-100) who, by the looks of it, was sailing on a pretty high level. We hope to see some of these guys on the PWA Tour this year…

However, these guys are certainly pushing the boundaries of how shallow you can go, just watch the video to see what we mean and be sure to keep an eye out for a pretty radical switch kono crash. It’s pretty rare we see windsurfing kit launched so high without any sort of chop at all.

DAY 1 SATURDAY

Today was a great day for the Surazo Windsurf Cup, the first event of the Chilean National Windsurf series, an unprecedented day in which all the best Chilean wave sailors went man on man to fight for the right to compete for Chile in the PWA Matanzas World Cup in November 2013. They had the chance to sail against each other in fantastic conditions in what turned out to be a fantastic day for Chilean windsurfing.

We were able to finish the first round of competition with the following results:

1st. Felipe Wedeles

2nd Andres Tobar

3rd Nico Recordon

4th Diego Fabres.

The conditions were some of the best we have ever seen for a windsurfing contest in Matanzas. There were big sets with a 13 second period. The wind was strong and consistent. The locals from Hotel Surazo showed off their skill and consistency sailing in their back yard and advanced to the finals with huge aerials and perfect cutbacks. Nico Recordon (Nautisport, Naish, Tabou) proved to be the surprise of the day, advancing all the way to the semi final with his aggressive and fluid style.

Other than the final, the best heat of the day was the quarter-final battle between the Fabres brothers, Benjamin and Diego. Neither of them wanted to miss out on their spot in the next round and they went blow for blow throwing everything on the line to see who would advance to the semi-final. In the end the judges were extremely hard pressed to tell the difference but had to award the win to Diego by 0.5 of a point.

The low points of the day were, on one hand the bad luck that young hopeful Alex Vargas suffered at having one of his waves “dropped in on” by another competitor, a wave that could have let him advance against Eduardo Hernan (Windsurfing Chile). On the other hand the Sciaraffia brothers (Windsurfing Chile) and Mikael Buhuon Shcultz (Nautisport) were unlucky not to pass the first round.

Tomorrow there will be conditions to complete the double elimination where everybody will get the chance to do battle again and finally re-challenge the winner of the first day.

DAY 2 SUNDAY

With Matanzas local Felipe Wedeles (Hotel Surazo, Goya Windsurfing, Hawaii 69) having dominated the single elimination with his style and fluidity, there were many fired up riders eager to get revenge in the double elimination. The double elimination allows everybody a second chance at competing against each other in order to advance up to meet the 4 semi-finalists of the day before at which point this new winner will have to beat position 4, then 3 then 2 and then finally beat the winner of day 1 twice if he is to take the final event victory.

The half a point that broke Benjamin Fabre’s run yesterday was clearly on his mind as he devastated the competition on his way back up through the double elimination in order to not only get revenge on his brother Diego, but also win his way all the way up to sail against Felipe Wedeles in the final and destroy him in the first super-final heat too.

Finally though, Wedeles’s experience paid off as the final heat was run at around 8pm in the fading light which is always Felipe’s favourite time of day to sail and he was able to defend his title from the first day and leave Benjamin in a very well deserved second place.

TESTIMONIAL OF HEAD JUDGE JOSE MANUEL PEREZ:

Sunday, since first light, we could see that the waves were bigger and better than Saturday. The sets were perfectly lined up and the waves were around 6-8 feet. It was clear that today we were going to be even luckier than the day before with the waves and the wind was slowly building. We set a start time of 3pm to allow the wind to fill in completely and prepared ourselves for a long and very exciting afternoon.

The format of today’s competition allows the losers from day 1 to come back to have a chance to fight against the 4 finalists from the first day and finally get the chance to try to knock Felipe off his throne.

Competition stared at 3:30 on the dot and the competitors, wind and the waves combined to give the spectators a great show from the terrace of the Hotel Surazo.

The sailors were impatient to get on the water in the fantastic waves and today, the winners had to go straight out into their next heat, with very little time between heats and it turned out to be a long but very successful day for Benjamin Fabres. He was on fire, inspired by his tight loss to his brother the day before and sailing with great style while picking off the best waves in his heats, using his skill and determination to leave everybody else in his wake. Knockecd out are Martin Rojas, Alex Vargas, Arnaud Frennet, Marcel Jansen and Toto… But advancing in style is Benjamin Fabres.

Yesterday’s brother on brother heat of Diego against Benjamin is repeated today and once again, neither brother wants to let the other advance but Benjamin is just too strong today, boosting huge aerials and radical turns to firmly stamp down his authority on his older brother. There is nothing Diego can do against an inspired Benjamin and after just a 5 minute break, he takes to the water again against Nico Recordon. Benjamin starts the heat with a huge aerial but Nico responds by picking off a huge wave and riding it all the way through to the end section where he pulls off a risky aerial but lands on the white water and breaks his mast foot, leaving Benjamin to enjoy the rest of the heat alone in the fantastic waves.

Next up, Benjamin has to face Andres Tobar who has all the pressure of being a Matanzas local and seems nervous at the threat of the man who has been on fire all day. The wind is dropping and the current has become stronger but the sailors are still able to ride 2 waves each in the 14 minutes allowed and both riders pick off big waves and ride them with style all the way through to the end section. It is hard to pick a winner as both riders scored big aerials and stylish cutbacks but to Benjamin’s delight the judges decide in his favour and he is through to face Felipe Wedeles in the super final.

It’s around 6:40pm and Benjamin is once again only allowed 5 minutes to rest in between heats. The riders are given 10 minutes to sail out to their heat, enough time to pass the waves and the current in the light evening winds, and start the heat in a good position. There is no longer any margin for error since the wind is so light now that any mistake could be the end of the heat for either sailor. They both realize this and take their time waiting for the best set wave. Benjamin picks off the first wave and connects a couple of solid turns with an excellent aerial. Felipe goes next and matches Benjamin’s wave turn for turn but with no aerial. Benjamin picks off the next wave and pulls of a stunning goiter, leaping ahead of Felipe on the score sheets. Felipe manages to pick off two more excellent waves but nothing that can match Benjamin’s goiter so the judges award the first super final to Benjamin, leaving a nail biting final heat with everything on the line.

By now the sun is setting and the wind has almost faded completely. The waves are still pumping but slightly less consistent. Benjamin falls to the pressure and picks off a small wave to begin the heat, pulling off several cutbacks but not scoring highly and ending up all the way at the end of the beach. He has to leave the water and run back up the sand while Felipe has patiently waited for a bigger set and rips the wave to pieces, leaving Benjamin Fabres with a mountain to climb, having to get back out through the current and then pick off another set wave. While he is sailing back out, Felipe picks off another set wave and pulls off several cutbacks and a couple of aerials. He is not going to let the young contender get away with a final scalp. His experience is proving to be too much. Felipe sails this spot into the sunset every good day of the year, and he is proving unstoppable in this final heat.

Benja makes it back out and picks off a decent set wave but although he rides it well, there is nothing he can do against the two high scoring waves of Felipe Wedeles. In the dying seconds of the heat, Felipe picks off one last wave and destroys it from start to finish. He smashes the first section, airs over the second section and then pulls a super stylish cutback and follows with one final smack , riding the white water all the way into the beach, his back yard, to the cheers of the other competitors and the spectators and volunteers.
