VIDEO: Official Red Bull Storm Chase Clip

Now we really get to see what it is like to windsurf in hurricane force winds. Red Bull have released their video from the first mission of the Red Bull Strom Chase series and let us just say that it really does include everything you could expect and more… When PWA Head Judge Duncan Coombs states that “everyone really sailed out of their skins” and that “it really was some of the most radical windsurfing I have ever seen” you can certainly mark his words, for this action well and truly backs up those claims.

Thomas Traversa took the top spot with the highest combined score throughout the day, meanwhile the likes of Dany Bruch and Robby Swift impressed with massively stalled forwards, pushloop forwards and more… Check out the action below.

It was a resounding success and at the same time not far off the definition of insanity as 10 of the finest windsurfers met at Ireland’s famous Brandon Bay to windsurf in the 72 knot hurricane force winds!!! Need we say more? The answer simply put is no. We’ve thrown in a bit of text from the official Red Bull round up, some initial footage from headline news reports and our own gallery of outrageous photos. After a ground-breaking day of hurricane-strength windsurfing, six sailors – Marcilio Browne, Dany Bruch, Victor Fernandez, Robby Swift, Julien Taboulet and Thomas Traversa – advance to Mission 2 of Red Bull Storm Chase.

With wind speeds peaking at over 70 knots and angry, 20-ft waves, the ten competitors on Mission 1 completed three rounds of competition at two spots in Brandon Bay, Ireland.

To kick-off the first round, Professional Windsurfers’ Association (PWA) World Tour Head Judge Duncan Coombs, Red Bull Storm Chase Sports Director Klaas Voget and local Guest Judge Timo Mullen picked a man-on-man format with a ten-minute heat duration in cross-onshore, port tack conditions at ‘Dumps’ beach.

There were definitely nerves amongst the competitors as they prepared their gear and struggled to drag it to the water’s edge in such extreme conditions. Not many people expected it to be even possible to sail in such strong wind that angrily churned-up the sea.

Red Bull Storm Chase – The Winners

Mission one is over and six advance. From the breaking dawn until sunset the riders were chasing the biggest waves, charging for the highest jumps and trying to stomp the most radical move, in the end one person would have the best score but six will advance to mission two. These six were: Thomas Traversa, Marcilio Browne, Robby Swift, Julien Taboulet, Victor Fernandez and Dany Bruch.

Although there is no official winner, it was Thomas Traversa who finished with the most points at the end of the day, this was probably due in part to his perfect 10 for an impressive wave 360. Meanwhile Robby Swift also scored a perfect 10 for a monster pushloop forward, we are pretty excited to see that one.

Red Bull Storm Chase – GREEN LIGHT

We had a good feeling about this one here at the Boardseeker news office. With barely any time before the first part of the front hits, the top selected riders will be racing across the globe to take up this opportunity. A great chance for many of these 10 windsurfers as we are personally aware that some of them were very keen to try out the conditions that Ireland had to offer. So buckle up your seat-belts ladies and gents, this is going to be one gnarly ride!

The chosen ones

The following riders are those selected and available for the Red Bull Storm Chase: Marcilio ‘Brawzhino’ Browne, Dany Bruch, Victor Fernandez, Boujmaa Guilloul, Robby Swift, Julien Taboulet, Thomas Traversa, Kenneth Danielsen, Leon Jamaer and Josh Angulo.

So what’s the forecast?

Well we’ve scanned the net and reeled in two very tantalising reports. In general all are agreeing on one thing, a huge swell with monstrous winds will whip Irelands west coast on Sunday/Monday, there will be a chance for the early arrivals to get a warm up session on Saturday but with much smaller waves. The question is, will the wind be so strong it blows the sea flat? Our experience from Ireland is that the underlying swell will still push through and we could expect between 30-40ft waves with wind-strengths up to storm force 10! Well that sounds like RBSC’s patients paid off. Take a look at our charts below that we grabbed from Bigsalty.com.

For those thinking of staying it looks like the fronts will keep on coming with 15-20ft swells right on through until the middle of next week.
