Behind the Lens: Tommy Perkins

Maui is without doubt the most well known windsurfing Mecca, attracting hoards of pros and holiday makers every year, ready to take on the brutal Ho’okipa break. Boardseeker catches up with and gets behind the lens of windsurfer and photographer, Tommy Perkins.

Tommy takes us on a whistle stop tour of Maui, with some unbelievable images, but first lets find out a little more about the man behind the camera:

I’m a Doctor (Anaesthetist) and Jo is a teacher (Primary school) in Poole, UK although we’re originally from Shoreham-by-Sea. I’ve been windsurfing about 7 years and Jo about 3. We love travelling all over the world chasing wind and waves.

I started taking an interest in photography about 4 years ago when a broken foot (windsurfing) kept me off the water for 3 months. As you can see from my portfolio (www.flickr.com/tommyperkins) I mainly shoot landscapes and was nominated for the Take a View Landscape Photographer of the Year in 2012. As any weekend warrior knows, work commitments limit time on the water and behind the lens, but in 2012 we both took 6 months off work for a dream trip to Maui and Western Australia, eventually settling in New Zealand for a year.

When my new wife and long-suffering windsurfing widow, Jo, left me in charge of organising our honeymoon destination there was only one place on my mind: Maui. We’ve been lucky enough to have several trips to Maui before, chasing perfect wind and waves. Here’s a few photos that we’ve taken on our trips….

VIDEO: Kona Winds Hit Lanes on Maui

An epic tune, an epic line up and a sweet edit. Xensr produced this one over the last few days and it looks like the young Bernd Roediger was showing a few of the older folk that he’s in town. Incredible how he saves himself from being worked on some of those aerial landings.

Own a Piece of ‘Bad-Ass’ Windsurfing History

Yes this is a shameless plug but a cool news item nonetheless. Robby Naish has put his Hearse up for sale! Yes the Hearse that you’ve seen in the movies is up for grabs and you can really own this rock n roll wagon.

1963 Eureka Cadillac Hearse – Hot Rod

“Bad-ass,” “evil,” “totally awesome” and “scary” are a few of the ways people have describe this car.

Dual side loader, in good shape for her age.

383 stroker small block Chevy with gear drive and turbo 400 trans with maybe 3000 miles since build. Approximately 105,000 miles on the car (101,000 when purchased in California ten years ago. Odometer stopped working after engine swap.)

18” Lexani wheels with 45 series tires. Chrome, pretty pitted but totally presentable. Original wheels, hub caps and tires also come with car.

In general this car is in very good shape for a non-restored ‘63. It runs strong, sounds incredible and turns heads like nothing else. I have a lot of cars, and though the Hearse gets out of the garage only a couple of times per year, it is by far the biggest crowd pleaser. On Halloween, just cruising on a Sunday, or at a classic car get-together, it is always drawing attention.

Video: Philip Koester nominated for Laureus Award

Philip Koester has once again been nominated for the Laureus Action Sports Award. The much acclaimed nomination will see Koester face the likes of Felix Baumgartner, the man who jumped from space with just a parachute and Stephanie Gilmore who has won five out of six surfing titles!

Koester was nominated for his remarkable achievements in windsurfing having taken the PWA World title for a second year running at just the age of 18. No doubt he is the one to watch this season but for now the best words he has are these – “believe me , I am super happy !!!!”. Oh trust us, we believe you. I would particularly like to congratulate Joel Parkinson who has been trying for so long to beat Kelly Slater – a four-time Laureus Award winner – and become the ASP surfing world champion. Well, this year he pulled it off with a win at the final event of the year.”
