Windsurf Australia: The Movie, filmed and produced by Col Leonhardt recently hit our screens and showcased the unbelievable conditions that have graced WA this Summer. Now Boardseeker catches up with Col, to find out more about the making of the movie.

“For the movie we really wanted to produce something that showed a bit of emotion to a usual summer here, not just the action, hopefully we achieved this. I’ve wanted to do this lifestyle/windsurf video of W.A. for years but just needed the right positive people to join in so at the start of summer Peter, Ben Proffitt and Justyna were really keen so we decided to do it this summer.

“It was logistically a little tricky, with Gnaraloo being the main issue. It took 5 years of planning including working out how to get fuel for the helicopter there but it all went very smoothly and we will go back there for sure. I run an aerial photography/filming business in W.A. so know all the pilots and helicopter companies quite well and they all help us out. Justyna has been joining us on heli shoots for years and is a natural so it was an obvious choice for her to help out, especially considering she was injured and couldn’t really sail that much at the start of summer.

“But Gnaraloo was a favourite place to film too, so it made it all worth while. The whole Gnaraloo trip was crazy, taking the Avgas up there was an experience, rigging up with a helicopter in the rigging area was “strange”. I also have a new favourite place to shoot ‘The Left’ (Ed – check out the feature about Volwater and Proffitt at this spot here) but it was too tricky to film at this year, hopefully next time though.

“It’s too hard to pick a favourite rider, but Peter’s an exceptional photoshoot rider, he can always deliver the shot in the least amount of time and of course Justyna, she’s a lot of fun and has endless enthusiasm.

“For anyone looking to come down under it’s a great escape from the northern winter, and even though it has become quite expensive to live here, if you know where to go and know the right people you can live here at a reasonable cost.

One of the top UK wave sailors and as well as achieving some very healthy results on the PWA Tour, John Skye has taken on an out of industry sponsor called Showergreen, here is more about it from the man himself.

“I am very happy to announce a new sponsor. Showergreen.eu are leaders in manufacturing and distributing patented water saving systems. Its basically a specialised shower head that is super easy to fit and drastically reduces your water consumption without reducing the pressure of the shower. In an average 3-4 minute shower you will consume half the amount of water, which is pretty amazing. We have them installed throughout our house already and they are working great. The CEO Salva, is a super keen windsurfer, so its great to work with him and let everyone know about the products. Check it out at www.showergreen.eu. Also make sure you check out their facebook page and like it.”

Welcome back and we have a couple videos to round up the day. The first from Sam Ross who caught up with Remi Vila for a closer looks at the Starboard Futura compared to the Starboard Carve.

The second video comes from the world of SUP. There is one or two windsurfing shots in there as well but the SUP action is pretty awesome, big waves, radical turns and a bit of trickery sums it up nicely.

________________________________________________________________________________________

Good morning all, according to the Mayan Calendar this could be our last week of windsurfing news, so lets make it the best yet. Actually we are not so convinced by all this Mayan malarkey but if you so wish please feel free to leave your comments about it below.

Swiftly moving on then and looking ahead to the 2016 Olympics we have a video of hope from the Bic Techno 293 scene. Many of the stars from tomorrow will pass through the 293 class in their campaign to race for their country so it seems only to appropriate to post this video after the recent reinstatement of windsurfing in the Olympic Games.

From a re-birth to a saddening loss. It was a little under a year ago that the french wave sailor Vincent Mellouet was taken from his family and friends in a tragic windsurfing accident on the south coast of France. In that time many memorials have taken place and now his long term girlfriend Blandine Fort has produced this clip to remember his last trip to Fuerteventura. Sail, My Love… is a moving tribute and a reminder that we should always keep safe on the water.

Moving to the safety of flat water. Well perhaps not so safe after you see this video. Speed sailing has been hot news lately due to the records that have been broken and re-broken during the Namibia speed event. In this next video we catch up with Antonine Albeau as he talks about what it is like to blast down a narrow trench at 52 knots!

The final video for the early update today comes from the Carro in the south of France. A few videos of late from there which can only mean that conditions have been firing. For those who are a fan of the point of view angle then this chest mount gives a great onboard perspective.

That’s all for the early update, apologies for the slight technical issues which resulted in the belated news today but join us later for a few more snippets.
