What is it?
A book about ‘intermediate’ windsurfing with words by Simon Bornhoft and RYA Chief Windsurfing Instructor Amanda Van Santen as technical editor. Once you mastered the basics, this book is the next step to taking you up to carve gybing. It uses the Fast Forward Formula (Vision/Trim/Balance/Power/Stance) which should be familiar to anyone who has been on a recent RYA windsurfing course. This is the second book of a three part series, the first being START Windsurfing and the last being ADVANCED Windsurfing.
What we liked about it
With all the DVDs, online web technique movies and coaching by video analysis you would think there isn’t room for a comprehensive intermediate windsurfing book, but despite the advances in technology we still like a ‘good read’! For those at ‘intermediate’ level (usually super keen to pick up all they can about their new sport) this book is ideal bedtime reading or to have in your glovebox whilst waiting for that forecasted Force 3-4 which hasn’t shown up yet!
From beach starting to planing, gybing, self-rescue, weather, tides, equipment, rigging, tuning....it’s all you need to know. You’ve just got to then go and do it!
Being an RYA publication, they have stuck to the Fast Forward formula throughout the book and bring up the five key points (Vision/Trim/Balance/Power/Stance) in each chapter. There is also a nice windsurfing glossary at the back so you learn exactly what catapulting and spinning out mean!
Coaches corner
This is actually very useful for the ‘coach’ and will no doubt widen the appeal of this book as an instructor tool as well as for the ‘student’. It poses the most commonly asked questions from students and gives you an appropriate answer
