With the Aloha Classic taking place in Maui we caught up with one of the up and coming youngsters. Meet Kimo Brown.
Name: Kimo Brown
Windsurfing for: 4 or 5 years
Windsurfing home: Oahu
Usually I sail port tack on the South Shore (opposite of Backyards and Ho’okipa) and this training session at Yards was a good little prep for the contest coming up. Backyards is a tricky place to windsurf; the waves are full top to bottom hollow racing walls, not to mention you only have a few feet of water below you at the top section, and dry reef down at boneyards. I was focusing on getting my aerial timing down on starboard as it is a different feeling for me to translate my moves into starboard.
This day had some decent sized waves, overhead to a few feet overhead and light side-offshore winds with just myself and 3 other guys out. Two of them will be competing with me here at the Aloha Classic; 9 year old ripper Wiley Daniel in Youth and Amateur, and my Dad, Jamie in amateur and grandmasters. Wiley was also charging these waves with me and be sure to look out for him on his 2.7 and 3.0 during the contest! I’m super stoked for the Aloha Classic.
It was a great experience finishing 5th in Amateurs last year and looking to improve my ranking this year in the tough Youth division. I’d like to thank Goya and +H20 for all the support and hope to see everyone have a great time at the contest.
