The wind didn’t fail and as predicted it was pretty good start to the Lanzarote Freestyle event.
After the registration, the first single elimination started, with some very interesting heats all the way to the final. The first big fight saw local Antxon Otaegui beating Kevin Mevissen, whilst in the same round Normen Gunzlein won a close battle with French Freestyle specialist Nicolas Akgazcian. Taty Frans was also an early upset, not keeping up with André Paskowski.
In the end, the top four men were Kiri Thode, Marcilio Browne, Ricardo Campello and Gollito Estredo. The current World champion Marcilio Browne took the victory against ex-world champion Ricardo Campello, while current vice World Champion took the third position against Kiri Thode, who finished fourth.
In the ladies fleet, some big fights were seen from the very beginning too. Venezuelan freestyle specialist Yoli de Brendt did her best trying to defeat vice World Champion Sarah Quita Offringa, but in the end it was the Aruban who won the first battle of the day. Junko Nagoshi couldn’t pass against Laure Treboux, despite the fact that she has improved her freestyle massively since last year. The swiss freestyler was on form and got through to the semis. On the other side of the draw, Silvia Alba had to face Iballa Ruano while World Champ Daida Ruano was against newcomer from Russia Raskina. Iballa won against Silvia and Daida did the same against Raskina.
The loser’s final was Laure against Iballa. The Swiss didn’t have a very good heat, while Iballa was looking solid and on form, taking the victory and the third place. The winner’s final was Sarah Quita against Daida. A classic already in the freestyle competitions, Daida and Sarah put up a bright show, and in the end it was the young Sarah who won this vibrant final.
