Day 2 proved to be a long day for everyone. The wave sailors were at the beach early waiting, but unfortunately the waves didn\’t pick up as expected.
The racers therefore stepped up at around lunch time to do battle in the strengthening 40kt winds. Things ran smoothly through to the finals, but then disaster struck as the start boat nearly sank. Despite furious bailing, the race committee had to put racing on hold whilst they attempted to resolve the problem.
Luckily a couple of hours later a new boat turned up and racing could continue where it left off. In the losers final Dunkerbeck shot into the lead and looked to have everything under control. Matt Pearch had other ideas however and went into attack mode. He looked to be gaining before he exploded on the second to last reach. A valiant effort never the less.
In the final it was Antoine who once again took control and continued where he left off, taking the lead and holding it to the end. Pritchard solid as ever took second, whilst Finian with his brand new boards took 3rd.
Having wasted half the day with boat problems the race committee didn\’t mess about again and had the next round started straight away. this time the losers final was won by Ben Van der Steen, with Volwater taking 2nd and Angulo in 3rd.
Once again Antoine took the winners final, but this time had to work a bit hardler. Arriving at the first mark back in the pack in 6th, he used all his gybing skill to steer throguh the pack and somehow come out in 2nd. He then powered his way into first place, leaving Dunkerbeck in 2nd and Finian again in 3rd.
The overall rankings after 2 races are:
1st Antoine Albeau
2nd Finian Maynard
3rd Kevin Pritchard
However it is early days and with a possible 14 rounds to complete it is still all to play for. Stay tuned for tomorrows action.
